The same as Megan's Law: make sure no person convicted of a sex crime can ever fully pay back their debt to society. It would serve the same purpose and save the tax payers some money if we just branded a "S.O" on their forehead so everyone could see it like some modern day Scarlet Letter.

if not, i just find it a bit off-putting. yes, scumbags are out there. if you're heavily into online dating or social networking, be viligant. some other wise things to do, check familywatchdog.us when you're moving into a new neighborhood or when your children enroll into a particular school. when you hire a nanny, run the name through the megan's law website. be careful out there. aside from that, i'd rather not see an IHB featuring a "S.O. of the Day" thread.

this is a debt you pay till you die, and most likely, thereafter

Unless they are 100% repeat offenders as a group, they are being treated differently than murderers, car thieves, drug dealers, or con men like Madoff. Last time I checked, that wasn't constitutional. Either you do it to every criminal, or you do it to none, but singling out a single class of criminal seems like a clear violation of the 14th Amendment and probably the 8th Amendment as well.

I have a real problem with sex offenders, particularly because as LR pointed out, they repeat so frequently. While I'm not a fan of trampling on the constitution, protecting society from REAL dangers is important. I was about to edit that because it sounded so Cheneyesque, but decided to go ahead anyway. Maybe Nude is right? I don't want to revert back to what the previous administration did and who am I to say that SO's are different from people being labeled as terrorists?

I didn't quite get why this was posted, but just had an inkling that there was some sort of connection between the poster and this guy, even if it was a few degrees.

I posted this. I was looking at the meghan's law database and googling names. I found this. It troubled me.

What if someone met this guy online and got raped. I would feel guilty that I didn't do anything about it.

On the other hand, what if this guy was convicted when he was 17 because he "raped" his 16 year-old girlfriend ("raped" because she was too young to legally consent). Maybe he's just like everyone else. I don't know.

So, I posted this to clear my conscience. I didn't post his name nor his place of employment. I don't want to harass the guy, I just want people to know what they are getting into.

By the way, I first tried posting this on the boards at meetup.com, but it was removed by a moderator in 5 minutes. I gave up, but the next day I posted it here.

About 33% of DWI drivers are repeat offenders and 12% of intoxicated drivers involved in fatal car crashes had at leas on prior DWI. About 5% of SO are repeat offenders (within 3 years).

Where is the database to locate all the DWI drivers in the neighborhood to keep your children safe!?!?

I'm not a legal expert in any way, shape, or form, but I think there is a difference between "statutory rape" versus "rape by force" & penetration with a foreign object by force. He was not convicted of statutory rape but the latter two. I believe if it's consensual and no force was used with the only crime being under age, then it's statutory rape. I think your first instinct was correct.

i'm now lawyer either but my concern is for IHB and joeyp's own liability. let's say this guy does gets harrassed or beaten up, could he claim that these public postings were the cause?

when you view the registries, you agree to a disclaimer that says the information cannot be used for harrassment. now that's pretty vague so i don't know whether that means in terms of what you're allowed to do with the information. i'm sure in meetup.com's line of business they deal with this sort of issue (or at least similar privacy-related issues) all the time. and as joeyp noted, they were very quick to remove the post.

having said that, it's nice to have people of conscience and vigilance out there. i hope all my neighbors are people like you. thanks and continue to be careful out there!
