i'm with irvine commuter - plummer's has the best combo between looks and price for contemporary furniture. room and board is a teeny bit more modern, but much pricier.
you can visit "furniture row" (it's a street called methinks carlota that is parallel to 5 right before the el toro exit if you come from irvine) where you will find a whole lot of furniture stores, including easylife which i like too. having said that, plummer's is still my favorite.
