Really puts things into perspective.

I would and have done the same thing. I don't pull money out of the real estate because i can retire that much faster. But I have no shame, my father brought me up working on farms, daries, foundries, quaries.... not fun work, but it makes you understand.

Welcome to the new America. Not a temporary adjustment but a permanent adjustment in lifestyle as the fake money disappears, so do all of the real jobs. Unfortunately, someone is left to pay for the fake money, it's going to be us (as well as many in the rest of the world).

I would do the same thing if that is what it takes to keep the family afloat. Reading those stories do help one to put things into perspective, and be more conscious in saving. Six figure salaries can all go to zero in a heart beat.

If you live in flyover country where a house costs $100K, you live like a king on 70 dimes. A full on 1%er.

This will indirectly fix a lot of illegal immigration issues. People will be forced down the food chain and displace them/discourage them from coming here because there is "no work".

I guess a deep recession is the answer to the illegial immigration issue. Interesting enough, highly skilled immigrants are also heading out of the US for greener pastures:

I woulden't call them super highly skilled, but skilled yes. Most of these guys were here on work visas anyways and were paid about 1/2 of normal around here.

While good for payroll, alot of them had issues with language, processes and yes, even skills were not matching. But certainly alot more than 99.99999999% of the college dead heads wanting to be the next hollywood/drama queen/action star/reality star/financial star... sheesh.

Though the cost of living in the Phoenix area is a lot lower than it is here, $70k isn't much there.

What is it here? Chump change? When you can rent a SFR for $1200 a month what the heck? Some users here would love to make $70K.

I'm from the area. (Tempe is a suburb of Phoenix and so is Scottsdale. I'm from Scottsdale) About a month ago I turned down a position that would have allowed me to go back home that paid $171k. I guess it's a matter of perspective, but I wouldn't consider that a living wage out here. Though there are parts of the country where 70k is livable, Phoenix isn't one of them.

Holy shit. Now I know why you hate taxes!

This is from a local paper back home about a year ago.

http://www.hanfordsentinel.com/articles/2008/07/29/news/doc488f5919d62b1072221873.txt

Only 6.5 percent of residents in the 20th District have a bachelor's degree, the study reported. By comparison, 56.8 percent of West Los Angeles residents have a bachelor's.

The median annual income -- for those holding part-time or full-time jobs -- in the Valley's 20th District is $16,767, the lowest in the nation. By comparison, residents of Manhattan's Upper East Side, which is part of New York's first-ranked 14th District, earn the highest income in the nation at $51,139 a year. Their residents live on average 4 1/2 years longer than residents in the Valley district, the study reported.

I didn't make $40K there and I lived like a king. I haven't been gone that long. Of the 6.5% that have degrees, almost all of them are teachers. When you turn 18 you must leave - there are no jobs.

Unemployment is currently over 14%.

It is a large issue. But that's far from the only reason I am Republican.

I understand that, but you certainly have cause to bitch about being overtaxed.

I can't argue with you there.

By my count, Obama has announced 4 separate tax increases that he has in store for me since taking office. And the state wants to dig deeper into my pocket too. I don't mind paying a reasonable amount for the services I consume, but I passed that level a long time ago.

USC, good find but I question the part of the Article that says "Gone for good" I think they will come back when the economy finally hits the bottom and we have to re-build it to create real wealth and the only way to do that is via Manufacturing, Mining and Agriculture so we will need more skilled People or better still, train them here!!

The same thing is happening in the UK where the economy is even worse, a lot of skilled workers are returning to their native Poland and similar Countries, after all, immigrants tend to be very mobile, once you've left your Home you can never go back.

Yep we see that in the engineering field. So far we are are declining at pretty good rate, we make about 35,000 engineers a year and retire close 60,000 per year. We've been replacing these guys with Indian and Chinese immigrants. BUT there are lots of issues in using them and invariably we see our products being made across the seas....

I blame it on the MTV/Reality TV kids. They all think they can become a star just by being themselves.... None of them really want to work hard and succeed. Engineering is FAR down the list. Oh well.
