When I came to America (1993) I picked up soda cans with my sister on the streets of Chicago. We also did a paper route, went door to door selling avon products, and often held bake sales.

My mom cleaned a few homes as her day job and during her spare time she would make earrings and necklaces out of beads and gave them to us to sell them on the street as well.

My father worked for 4.25 (minimum wage) at a factory 3.5 hours away from home. He also worked as a janitor at local hardware store picking up some extra hours.

Every Friday afternoon my sister and I along with my mom stood in lines behind a local grocery store. A nice old man (to help locals) would go from grocery to grocery store bringing expired or near expired produce/food for distribution.

All of this wasn't enough...we still would have came short month after month if it wasn't for the government support and tax benefits we received. Not to mention the great benefits for education that we received (when we got older) while we went to college (cut short when Bush came in to office.)

Because of America and the great sacrifice my parents gave; I am in the position I am today. To be frank, I'm in a position where all my needs are met and I can pretty much buy whatever my heart desires.

So I can be selfish and vote for McCain because his tax benefits benefit me far greater than Obama especially considering my line of work. But I can't be selfish. I have to remember the situation I was once in and assume that there are other hard working individuals out there wanting to succeed in this great country. However, many times no matter how hard you try you just can't get there. This is due to high taxes, high education costs and rising healthcare costs.

That is why I voted for Obama. Oh and before anybody assumes I'm black because of the name...I'm very white, 27, and look more like a typical American than most Americans.

McCain attacks Obama for distributing wealth...what do you call McCain wanting to give billions to homeowners going into forclosure by adjusting their loans? That "my friend" is what we call distribution of wealth and the wrong way by proping up artificual values of homes.
 
Nancy, question for you ... can anyone PROVE that supply side economics works the way Republicans claim it does? And as far as progressive taxation goes, McCain has been as much of an advocate of that as Obama. Only in the last couple of week this has been interpreted as a socialist stance. To me, it just reflects the ignorance of the right wing in understanding what socialism really is. I'm just disappointed that you are falling for this smear as well.

I am responsible for the finances in my house. My husband owns a business. If we are taxed any higher than we are now, we will have to cut jobs. Period. 2 years ago I wrote a check to the govt that was by far larger than an check I've ever written in my life. We are not wealthy, meaning we cannot live without working.

Perhaps the individual you cut will be inspired by Obama to start a business like yours and eventually muscle you out. Perhaps if you are nice to them they might give you a job. Or perhaps if you did your finances better, you wouldn't have to cut anybody.

How about services for veterans coming back from war? How about children who end up in poverty? How about bankruptcies due to unaffordable healthcare? You are buying too much into the Reagan myth of the welfare queen.

The answer is: every person who started their own business from scratch and was successful enough to require help, so they hired people. Remakably, these kinds of businesses don't require anything more than customers and hard work. If your taxes go up, you have a choice rather than just fire people; you can charge more for your services, you can cut salaries across the board, or you can accept a lower profit margin. Your tax rate does not dictate a single course of action, even if your attitude does.

I CHOOSE to stay where I live, and fight for a better place, a better city, a better community, and safer places for my children. Again you cant come up with a better insult?
