Naa, its not that bad, the rifle barrel and trigger system have a recoil mechanism.... Its not that bad, similar to a .30-06 or a 12 gage with maginum 00 buck loads.

I actually like the Goalkeeper CIWS better... uses the same 30mm GAU-8/A cannon as the A-10. However these days the trend is to replace 20mm & 30mm gun-CIWS with missile-CIWS, so their days are probably numbered.

Yes and no, the Phanlax is a little overkill and is VERY close in... too close for confort that is. So the RAM provides a better standoff range while the Phanlax is a last line of defense.... It would be foolhearty to get rid of it IMHO. Expecially against threats like the Exocet.

The updated Block 4 as well as the LAND Based Phanlax works actually quite well on smaller targets (bullets, albeit BIG bullets) that the missles cannot lock into.

I think the next evolution would be the Metal Storm concept, the only issue with said weapons system is reload time and if the system expends itself all at once....

I think gun-based CIWS systems had its day in the sun from 1980-2000's, but it's coming to an end. It replaced the old-style dual-xx mm AA gun systems that were incapable of intercepting sea-skimming missiles like the Gabriel/Scorpion, but is being rendered obsolete by missile based systems like RAM, ESSM, and (up coming) Sea Streak.

IMO we'll probably see navy ships with 2 x RAM launchers and 2 x remote-controlled small caliber AC. The small caliber AC will be less effective in CIWS role, and the primary CIWS system will be RAM or ESSM. To compensate for loss of 20mm-30mm CIWS guns, some navies will upgrade their ship's main gun to systems such as the Italian Davide or Strales system with DART guided munitions, for emergency use in CIWS role.

Metal Storm is a neat concept, but will probably never make it to the deck of a navy ship. Faced with space/weight/cost constraints, designers will opt for missile CIWS over gun CIWS for better flexibility. A gun system must maintain lock-on target and can only intercept one target at a time, plus the Gatling guns will overheat very quickly. Missile based systems can intercept many more targets at once, and the latest missiles have "lock on after launch" for fire-and-forget interception capability.

Here's an article from Zhuhai 2008 air show's FL-3000N product, basically the Chinese defense industry came to the same conclusion and is emulating US/German RAM concept:

I do agree with you that missle CIWS is the name of the game right now. But really, when does anybody ever launch just one missle? They usually launch 2-3 missle salvo and then just wait. When nothing happens, they salvo a few more, missles are cheap, boats/ships are NOT cheap.

PLUS missles CAN AND DO fall prey to EW/Spoof/Jam AND you have to realize that you can't engage close in slow movers with a gun or a missle. Again, missles are a long range standoff, when the threat is too close (and there have been) they just can't deal with it. Say you are in a harbor and you have some slow movers... what do you do? Send some guys out there with with a rifle? 99.9999% of the time, they will be armed, probably with RPG's .... I will agree while yes you can, its not exactly a perfect system.

What scratches that itch? You bet a old fashion gun!

All I have to say is remember the F-4 Phantom and thier RELIANCE on missles? How long did that last?

BUT you are right, the current solutions are ESSM/RAM and a few other systems (The Exocet and chinese versions of it are very deadily also... just not top quality).

The FL-3000N launcher model is basically a copy of the RAM launcher, but I suspect the actual product will vary in appearance. The missile itself is very different from the RAM. From description that I found elsewhere (not necessarily in article above), the launcher will have 4, 8, 12, and 24 round versions. Each combat station controls 2 x FL-3000N launchers. Basically it'd be like the German corvettes with 1 x RAM launcher in front and 1 x RAM launcher in the back. Navies like this kind of system because it allows better multi-target engagement, with lock-on after launch capability.

As for anti-ship missiles, unless if you're dealing with near-shore or gulf-like areas, I think ship to ship missile engagement will be very rare. It's far more likely for surface ships to be engaged by strike aircraft today, and armed UAV's tomorrow. The current generation of anti-ship missiles have yet to catch up in technology level, with possible exception to the Norwegian NSM missile. Just wait until stealth missiles enter the marketplace, can't shoot down what you can't see.

Is it smart to retire gun-based CIWS systems? Given choice I think most captains would prefer to have a gun as the last line of defense. But space and weight is at a premium on a navy ship, and sacrifices have to be made. Otherwise all our ships will look like Soviet-era Russian warships packed full of explosives on top.
