Maybe I'll see if he can get me a no-recourse loan for the car. Then I'll drive it around for a few months without making any payments. When they finally come to repo the car I'll just hand over the keys and go back to driving my beater.

I don't know how much of a fire sale it is. I just looked up the Kelly Blue Book value of a 2005 S600, and in excellent condition with 35,000 miles, it is worth $78,835 (private party transaction)
In typical IHB fashion, I think I'll take the opportunity to say that I'd pay $35,000 for it. With a length of 203.3 inches and a width of 73 inches ( sourcehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W220), it is 14840. square inches or 103.06 square feet. I think that $340 a square foot is more than fair for this car.

I think its a fire sale because it sounds like he paid an extra 70K for Brabus to modify it and brought the cost of the car to 200K. The Kelly Blue Book you mention for 78K is probably for a regular S600. Brabus modifies MB cars (after market) , AMG did the exact same thing until MB bought them.

Don't forget that the car likely has a high overhead in terms of mechanical maintenance, weekly professional detailing, and goes through those low-profile tires in no time. Considering the rental equivalent is probably only $600-750 per month I'd say this car is worth $32K TOPS!!!

Actually, I think even $70k or 80k is too much to pay for a car. You can easily pick up an used BMW 7-series used for ~$40k with reasonably low mileage, or even less for a 5-series. I'd take the $ saved and put it into a Euros CD or something.
I had a rather bad experience with the local Lexus dealership, and would never go back there again. But I do like the GS 450h.
