I am in the market for an ereader, very much oriented towards the $139 Kindle currently being offered by Amazon.
What are your recos? I haven't looked at Sony/ Nook yet, but Ipad is a bit expensive for now.
Please share :-)

My daughter has a Kindle and loves it. If you want something just for books and books alone, the Kindle is a nice machine.

Most tech companies are in a mad rush to create pads or micro note books. If you're considering a purchase I'd wait. Once the Verizon network opens up to the Iphone, an Ipad v 2.0 will be a sharp machine. Should have a camera at that time - an all in one unit you can use for both reading and phone calls with Skype.

The new Kindle(s) seemed to be the price leader... but if you can afford it, like SGIP says... an iPad may be a better all-around device.

The nice thing about the e-readers is lower weight, power consumption and portability... the iPad is one heavy beast. I also think the e-readers read better in sunlight than the iPad (because of the e-ink technology).

You may also wait to see what Android/Chrome offerings are coming out... and there will be PC alternatives to this whole tablet computing trend.

I did some quick web scanning and although Kindle seems to rate the highest, the Nook has some features that may be important such as expandable memory, user-replaceable battery, color touch screen interface and a wider range of downloadable media (not too sure about that part). But it also sounds like it may have more technical issues than the Kindle.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I consider FARK.com a must read for news snippets. This AM they had a post/link with sources at Microsoft saying there was renewed urgency at MS to create a pad device. (fark snark) "just like the Zune was to defeat the Ipod, and the Kin set to crush the Iphone". When Microsquish gets into the pad business you know your choices will continue to grow. Blackberry's pad is coming as well - the BlackPad - no, really... so more and more vendors with better and better devices are ahead.

So out of curiosity during my ritual Best Buy outing (I go there probably 3 times a week), I checked out the Sony e-readers and the Nook (the Kindle is only online).

For overall features, the Nook is impressive but it depends one what kind of book reader are you. If you read paperbacks, you definitely have to go with the Sony as their two smallest readers are in the paperback size range... if you are a hardback reader, then the Kindle or Nook will not be a big shift for you.

The iPad is heavy... and bigger.

And yes... the BlackPad... marketing genius at work... BerryPad or bPad would have been much better.

Wow! Lot of information for me to process- thanks guys:-) Will check out the links and get back with my decision soon..
SGIP, even DH is suggesting ipad.. but I thought it's a bit heavy to sit and read books on, and kindle was the lightest version.
Checked out the library, and they say nook gives access to library, but ipad being a computer can download those books too.. they don't support Kindle.
Confused even more now:-) When I started out, it was as easy as which kindle to buy, and now it's do I really need that kindle when there are other better options available.

The reason why the Nook, iPad and Sony Readers can access the library is because they support PDF format. It might be supported in the future by Kindle... esp if it becomes a buy factor for consumers.

So because I'm OCD when it comes to gadgets... I did a little more research and I think I would go with one of the two smaller Sony Readers, either the Pocket or the Touch. The Pocket is the smallest one, but the Touch isn't that much bigger and you get the touchscreen experience. Like the Nook, they have have expandable memory and I believe a replaceable battery. Both are under $200.

For me, portability is key... and you want to carry around something light like a book. There is also one other option you may think about if you don't mind the form factor of an iTouch (iPod Touch) device. They will probably do a product refresh in September and use the more advanced IPS LCD display that the iPhone 4 uses. The advantage is the display is much better than the current iTouch and it is almost like reading printed material. The iBooks App comes with a free copy of Winnie the Pooh and reading it on the iP4 was actually pretty decent. It depends on your eyes and if you can look at such a small screen of course... but it's another thing you may want to wait for or think about.

The latest Apple must-have gadget. "The Macbook Wheel will make typing a thing of the past."
Quite expensive ($2600) though.

No joke: Typing on the Macbook Wheel is almost identical to typing on the remote for my Samsung Internet-enabled-TV...right down to the predictive text.  ???

Do they have the white one?

Guys, just wanted to update you. Ended up getting an ipad.. Almost placed an order for Kindle, but DH changed my decision and funded it:-)
So far, addicted to it.. haven't read a single book, but been using it for everything else!

Steve Jobs got you.

Bought it for reading but ended up using it for all the other stuff.

There was someone at the airport who had a pretty nice case for his iPad. It's the protective wallet kind (where the top flips over to protect the front) but when you fold to the back, it can fold into a triangle shape so when you put the iPad on your lap or any flat surface it's tilted upwards. I thought that was a nice design and helps with neck fatigue or always having to hold it up (even the Best Buy stores have the iPads on little glass tilted pedestals to give consumers a better look). It wasn't very bulky either so the total package stayed slim.

Have fun iPad-ing!

IHO, got that cover also. With kids in the house, made sense to get some kind of protective casing.
After many years, have bought something that has given me absolute pleasure:-)
