So we finally got a DVR from Dish Network about 3 months ago and over the past week we have received a "system has been corrupted" message and lost all taped shows and had to wait 30 min. to 1 hour each time for the system to reset. This has now happened 4 times. We called today and after about 30 minutes on the phone we were told that this is occurring because we don't turn off the receiver at night. This sounds completely ridiculous to me. They are telling me that I can't just watch TV in bed and turn it off and go to sleep because every night I will have to go out to the living room and turn off the receiver. I told my husband that they just told him that to get him off the phone and the technician just hopes it won't be him the next time we call. Is there anyone else who thinks this is stupid?

That sounds like an answer to get you off the phone and stop complaining. It probably has to do more with the POS they call a DVR.

It is my understanding that your DVR never turns off. Even if it is switched off, if it's really off, how will it know to turn on and tape the Rockford Files at 3:30?

They need to send you a new DVR.

The people best able to answer problems are over here at the Satellite Guys website - Dish Network Forums. For anyone here to help you, they'd have to know the model number. Here's the board for Dish Network Technical Discussions. When we had Dish we used that site a lot and it was the best. Hope this helps. (P.S. Make sure your DVR is not in a sealed cabinet without ventilation.)

That puppy sounds defective. I got a defective one from DirecTV and after resetting only once and it not fixing the problem they had me ship it back and they sent me a new one. I have never turned off a DVR overnight. Ever. The actual TiVo in the living room has been on for several years straight, excepting power outages.

TIVO is the best DVR out there. None of the cable companies can really compete with the ease of use and reliability.

I used both Cox and Time Warner DVRs and had to get new boxes because they didn't work right. Not one problem with TIVO.

They have a Hard Disk Drive in them that gets corrupted.

The drive is on 24/7 and just wears out. Especially if they use

a poor quality drive. Very common in all DVR`s. And especially if the

unit is covered and not allowed good air flow. Heat is death to Hard Drives.

Thanks for the info, unfortunately ours is only 3 months old and it isn't covered at all. Sounds like I need to call back again and DEMAND a new one, which means my husband can't make the call, just another thing for me to do

>:-(

Just suffice it to say, NEVER order DISH network, CANCEL it immediately. I have actually NEVER been so angry at any company in my life. I just unleashed the biggest case of whoop-ass I have ever dealt in my life, it must have been everything I have ever been angry about in my life coming out on one company to two poor underpaid customer representatives and one person called a manager anyone has ever seen. I won't be paying for my last three months of service and I will get a technician out to my house within 24 hours at my convenience (and then I will cancel my service). They will not charge me a dime and they will pick up their equipment and I will become a customer of DirectTV. At this point every person at DISH Network is probably discussing this crazy angry person and they are probably wondering why they work for such a horrible company. I really can't even explain the depth of my anger. All of the people who told me to order a DVR and start actually watching things when I want must not have had Dish Network.

I'm usually not crazy, seriously.

LOL, the no_vas/graph effect is rubbing off on you. I might say sorry, but it sounds like DISH needed to get dished in your case.

[quote author="no_vaseline" date=1242910241]I wanna warn you - Direct TV is no better.

So who is the least worst of the bunch...Cable, DISH, or DirecTV?

Really, would like to know.

At one point in my rant, I mentioned something about the fact that in the 1970's I could actually turn on the TV and it WORKED. I can't say as much for DISH. God, I don't even remember everything I said, but I certainly said enough to scare my kid.

I really like my DirectTV. So long as I don't have to call them.

The last guy out to put my second line in (my DVR has two tuners and needs two antenna leads from the dish) was just a stud. He even vacumed up the mess.

In our professional opinions. (I build post production hardware}. (And my son works for the "Big" local Flat Panel Company). As far as "Recording" and storing HD. Your better off with Cox and a Tivo. I would suggest looking at comments in www.avsforum.com. Look at HD Reception. Orange County CA. It seems that the HD signal the Dish and Direct TV send out is what we call a "Soft HD".

On the downside. Cox is NOT cheap. Does not have the greatest number of channels.

But on the upside. You can walk into the Quail Hill service center and get in someones face

when you really are upset about a service issue.

Nothing more infuriating than dealing with a poor customer service department over the phone.

Haha That's exactly what I did when I found out that they billed me $60 for installation last year when I moved into the QM apartments. I walked in there with my cable box ready to hand it in and cancel my service when the lady went in the back and came back in 5 minutes letting me know that the install fee will be waived and I'll get one month of high speed internet for free.

Couldn't agree more. I have COX and it blows away Directv and Dish in HD picture quality. I signed up my parents to Directv and have had nothing but problems. Their HD signal goes out every few hours and we've had 6 techs come in to try and fix it. They refuse to do anything except offer another service call. Once you have issues with satellite, you are screwed. Cable is more expensive but you won't have the same headaches.

You can also get a discount with COX by calling retention and telling them you're going to switch to satellite or Uverse.
