Driving to Vegas new years

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
The veags strip is shut down to traffic at 5pm on dec 31. If I want to make sure I get there before then, what time should I leave Irvine driving? I heard new years traffic to vegas is really bad. Anyone here made the new years drive to vegas b4?

I?ve flown there for New Years never drove.

That would be a nightmare drive.

There will be tons of people on the road trying to get there for New Years.

Not to mention all the other people going to Laughlin and the river.

Can?t you leave a couple days earlier?

It makes sense.

Your energy will be much higher since you?ve rested and are not coming off a 5 hour (at least) drive.

About noon. On Christmas.

Seriously, if you want to go to vegas on NYE I'd leave no later than 8am. Tops.

I've done it, leave the night before... like around 2:00am. You'll get there with a minimum of fuss. Otherwise i'd probably fly, it would be easier and a HELL of lot less hassle.

good luck

After going to Vegas every few months for about 30 years.

Rule Number 1. NEVER DRIVE. No Exceptions. EVER.

Fly out of Long Beach or John Wayne and save the hassle.

I was in Vegas for New Years one time and friends were driving in on New Years Eve.

It was horrible!! It took them 10 hrs and trying to find us was such a problem.

They made it there before the count down but we did not see them till afterwards.

If you do drive... don't do it on New Years Eve.

Don't leave New Years day either... or you can expect another 10 hr drive home.

I flew last time for vegas, but this time I am making the trip as cheap as possible. Four ppl in a car is pretty cheap. I'm thinkin maybe I'll leave by 6am, where a 10 hr drive will get me there by 4pm still.

I hear you but that long in a car; you?ll be worn out by the time you get there.

Dec 30th!

I know you want to save some cash. But at what Physical/Mental Cost ?

Possible 16 Hours Round Trip in the car in the middle of the desert.

Or

Coach Flight is like $69.00 Each way. USAIR. John Wayne. 55 Minutes.

Friends don`t let friends drive to Vegas. Especially on a Holiday like New Years.

Vegas, Baby, Vegas!!!

Enjoy it... the ride is half of the fun.

I remember spending two New Year's Eves in Vegas. Errr, scratch that... I mostly remember.

I totally would. You can drink on the train!

My understanding is that the gas/oil companies have lobbied against it so it never became a state priority.

Proposition 777, anyone?

I travel back and forth to Vegas for work and to see my dad. I would say leave the day before New Years and either go early in the morning or late at night to beat the traffic.

Not true, you just have to be smart about when you leave So Cal and Vegas. If you've driven enough times, you will have a wide open road which is very relaxing for me (pop in some CDs and clear my head). I love driving (I have a sports car with a radar detector) and hate dealing with airports, especially McCarran.

Other reasons not to drive.

Wear and tear on the car. My car is not Valet Friendly. Too low. Too fast.

FYI. They use planes to speed trap you on the 15 these days.

Yes McCarran can be a pain in the butt.

But watching some guy pass me towing a boat going 100 MPH is not my idea of a relaxing drive

on the 15.

I don't know about that. Last time I flew to Vegas I regretted not driving. By the time you spend getting to the airport, parking if you bring your own car, going through check-in, time-consuming security, sit on the runway, fly, land, get your bags, hitch a ride or rent a car... you could have already been there with time to spare! (And have your own vehicle to get around.) I wouldn't fly there again - not worth it to me.

That's been my experience. It takes me just as long to park at John Wayne, fly to McCarran, get my bags, and rent a car, as it does for me to drive from OC to Vegas. The only time I fly to Vegas is for work when I have no checked bags and I can bill a client for a limo ride from McCarran.

I?m with you on this.

Cannot handle the long drive going and especially coming back tired.

Flying is not only faster but much more convenient for me as well.

Ten

I think its 50% not risking one of the cars.

And 50% I want to party when I do Vegas. That means driving is not a good option.

Nothing like waiting for my flight at LAS in the USAIR club on the way home.

Then sleeping for the hour home in the plane. Planes make me sleep for some reason

after years of business travel. Way more relaxing than dodging drunk drivers on the 15

after 3 days of limited sleep.
