Dog shedding problem

We have a dog that we love but the hair shedding is becoming unbearable.  Please let me know if there is any tips or things we can do to minimize it or contain this issue. 

We've had the dog since it was a puppy and it would be sad to give it away since my two kids are attached to it.  We thought about keeping it outside in the patio but the dog's been always in the house...  Thanks.
 
Big dog or small dog?

We had a lab that shed enough to make another dog every week. We bought The Furminator (http://www.furminator.com/), but it was time consuming to do that periodically.

We also had him groomed at Petco every few weeks with something called ShedLess where they cut his undercoat (much like the Furminator) but it was still infinite fur all over the place.

In the end, it was too much (not for me as I'm not allergic to dogs)... and we did end up having to place him with another family (but at least they were a retired couple who can spend more time with him).

My parents had a Shitzu and those barely shed. Dogs with hair (like poodles), not fur) shed way less... dramatically less. You have to get them groomed regularly because of their longer hair but that's minor compared to having to clean up fur daily.

Good luck... I understand how hard it is, esp with the kids attached to your dog.
 
if you end up having to give up your dog please try to find a good home for him. as for leaving him outside all day, its one thing if you are at work and he stays out all day, but to leave him out there even when you are home is not a good idea. dogs are pack animals and need to be around other dogs/humans, they are not loners like cats.  dont keep them in the backyard just because your kids are attached to the dog. the dog will get what, 10-20 minutes of playtime with your kids and then spend 23.5 hours alone? just give him up if that is the case.  as a last resort you can give him up to the irvine animal shelter off of sand canyon, they are a no kill shelter. i commend you for at least trying to solve the problem before you give him up.  have you considered shaving him down every 2-4 weeks? not sure if that helps though.  good luck.

I think it's lab + chiwawa or border collie mix.  The pet shelter wasn't sure.  It's a medium size dog about 20 lb and relatively short hair about 1.5 inches (at least the ones on the floor).

I found this Nutri-vet shed defense chewable online. The reviews are generally positive even on Amazon.  I may try them.  They are not expensive but not sure whether I can get it from local store.  It's only $6 but they add $5 for shipping and it takes 1 week.  Hopefully this will reduce it.

By the way, I am not sure but may be it's stress related.  We got this dog almost a year ago when it was 2 months old.  The center neutered the dog but the surgery wasn't done well and the scar was not healing well and internal organ was bulging out.  The dog went through 2 more surgeries (2nd one covered by the center but 3rd one we paid. Luckily we found the vet who didn't charge us a fortune)  Now the dog is healthy and has no problem but just wondering...
 
Did you feed your dog dry food most of the time?  If you do, fish oil/fatty acid supplement, egg white, and high quality canned food might help.
