Do you need fire sprinkler in attic above furnace?

We are realizing that there are no fire sprinklers in the attic above the furnace.  I?d think that is mandated since it could be a fire hazard.  Builder isn?t adding it, saying it?s not required.  Is this true?

My father was going to build an extension to his house.
The additional sq footage would make the house bigger than 5,500 sq feet.
It would require fire sprinklers, so he decided not to do it.
