Devil's Advocate thread: If you like Irvine, what parts about it do you dislike? and if you dislike Irvine, what do you like?

In any good debate, its always good to argue the other side to get a clear picture of your own. I figure it'd be interesting to see what'd come out of this.
 
To start it off, as an Irvine-phile there are still a few things I dislike:

1) Nothing’s open past 10pm.

2) Everytime someone gets pulled over, there are 2-3 cops there. (Do they not have anything else better to do?)

3) The fact that I’ve lived in my house for years now and still manage to drive past it every now and then.

4) Very few non-chain restaurants to eat at

5) Mello Roo’s, and how expensive homes can be.

6) Anal HOA’s

7) The huge peloton of riders that run all the red lights and stop signs during the weekends.

8) Slow ass drivers that wear those white driving gloves and welding masks visors.

9) The necessity to register your kid for pre-school before they’re even born if you want them to get in.
 
Many of the homes are very close together in many parts of Irvine.

There are not enough mature trees in "Shady" Canyon and the landscape looks rather bleak. The homes are amazing.

The lower elevation areas, (close to the 405), smell like sewer.

That is about it. All in all I think the good points in Irvine far outweigh the bad points.

1) Why are you out pass 10pm anyways? I'm not 20 something anymore, I need sleep, I have a kid, I work, and am tired!

2) Good... If I get pulled over, I want other witnesses... I have an acquaintance in the IPD, I'm sure they are not as busy as other PD in other cities, but that is what we paid for..

3) Never happened to me before,, but yeah, friends who visit often still get lost; and I hate gates.

4) Irvine variety means eating at the Chick-fil-A at the Woodbury Towncenter, Marketplace or The District! I swear each of those location have their own local flavors...

5) I agree... nothing to argue there.. it's a fact of Irvine, take it or leave it...

6) Again... nothing to argue there... although I just found the minutesto the Cachette board meetings, very interesting to see who is behind on their payments...

7) Don't really see them... maybe they are well hidden in the various well designed network of trails

8) With any large Asian population; there will be Asian Drivers,, sorry

9) Amen... bro
 
I think the confusing street layout is an intentional plan to lower crime. With house prices so expensive, criminals typically can't afford to live in Irvine, so they don't know the layout, and criminals from out of town get lost and can't figure out how to get out of dodge after they commit a crime, so they easily get caught by the fleet of bored IPD officers.

What the ???? What's my grandmother and mom doing in Irvine? They never told me that they are moving out there. I can't believe they are already there before me.

Panda's Advice: Don't start telling your mom and grandma how nice Irvine is.
 
This topic is up there with "what is mello roos?". The senior members are not responding not because of a slow Wednesday.

This seriously cracks me up, I've never seen it until this month when I've traveled to Irvine daily. I've never seen so many police. I have become an obedient full stop citizen this month.

The preschool stuff is pretty funny too. I bet that some people in Irvine don't realize that those of us in other cities register our kids for really great preschools somewhere around their third birthday.

Part of the road rage could be that the lights in Irvine seem to be significantly longer than other cities, lots of speeding to try to miss the red light. They might just seem longer because so many times you are waiting forever and there isn't anyone coming the other direction. I have to say I have adopted a much more "chill" attitude during my summer travels in Irvine, however if I lived there I think I might get annoyed.
 
I like some things about Irvine and dislike others

Dislikes:

1) Traffic signals make no senses...nothing like watching your light turn green just to see the next light turn red.

2) No public transportation whatsoever...I should not have to drive to John Wayne when I live 5 miles away

3) The complete lack of decent Chinese food (my personal pet peeve)...someone please open up a Hong Kong style cafe!

Likes

1) High speed limits (50 mph is awesome)

2) Good retail/shopping choices.

3) Good parks/playgrounds.

Supposedly, some areas have "smart timing" where you should be able to go from green to green. The only place I've really noticed this is Culver. Timed correctly (this is of course not during super high traffic times) I can get all green lights from Walnut to the 405.

It's mainly for business users but how about the ishuttle?

OCTA should be able to get you to other parts of Irvine.

Some things that Irvine doesn't have:

1. A decent Italian food place

2. A decadent Mexican food place (like Alberto's)

3. A good fried chicken restaurant (they closed Mrs. Knott's years ago)

4. A cheap place to get a man's haircut
 
Given that I live in Irvine but am looking to move out, what are some things I like about Irvine?

1. Plenty, although still not enough, tennis courts.

2. That I can roll out of bed and hop on my bike and get to a bike trail in less than five minutes without having to drive to one.

3. The responsiveness of IPD to the most minor of incidents.

4. The smell of strawberry fields on a warm day (though not for long).

5. The Iranian pastry shop on Culver (forgot about that until now)

6. A place to fuel up my CNG vehicle (although Santa Ana offers that as well)

I'm wracking my brain and that's all I can come up with for now. I think I don't fit the demographic for which Irvine has been designed.

And QH, if preschool enrollment is a big concern, you should be happy some people are not interested in Irvine. It's fewer people competing for limited spaces. :)
