Chinese Dumpling restaurants.

My wife and I have been going to Din Tai Fung for over a year now as recommended by members here. She is Irish and loves simple Chinese steamed food. I also appreciate the simplicity of the steamed "little basket" dumplings. Although we do not mind the drive to Arcadia every other weeks but would like to find a good chinese dumpling restaurant here in OC or OC vicinities.

Any suggestion?

You can buy frozen shao lung bao from many Chinese supermarkets and some Chinese restaurants in OC. Quality varies and you'd have to experiment a bit with your steamer to find something you like. Many of these in plain packaging came from folks who made them at home for extra $$. I'll dig around and see if anyone knows a good place in OC.

Get the regular and crab meat shao lung bao here. Cheaper than Ding Tai Feng and closer than Nanxiang Dumpling House in Shangai. ;)

i order frozen xiao long bao and other chinese goodies from a chinese restaurant/deli in monterrey park. we place our order by phone and once a wk they deliver orders to irvine. if you ever see a van in the pkg lot of the culver plaza with a whole line of chinese people holding cash, no need to call the cops (although TIC have a problem with the business.) they're not selling dope, but equally addictive goodies.

if anyone is interested i'll try to scrounge up an electronic version of the menu.

the health grades are impt to know if it's good chinese food. if it's an A, stay away. ;)

heard from a coworker originally. the operation is run by taiwanese folk. they come on fridays to the culver plaza near cathay bank around 5-6. i've attached the menu. the frozen dumplings unfortunately are only in chinese on the menu.

call jerry at 626.715.3051 if interested.

In Rowland Heights, outside of the closed Hong Kong Supermarket, there's a little hole in the wall place called Meng Ren that sells frozen dumplings. It's a little expensive but good quality. If they're closed, you can go to Shun Fat Supermarket across the street and look for it in the frozen dumplings section.

My wife and I are really enjoying the steamed Chinese dishes. We went to 888 in Rosemead and our nephew and niece (gwailo teenagers) from Walnut Creek really like the Chicken feet and jellyfish. Next time they will have to try the red tofu with beef tripe.

I havent had a good shou long bao in Irvine. All the places I have gone to do not taste very good.

When someone finds a place, please tell me as well.

That is funny about the vans, pretty good idea

Get sinbala to send out some of their sausages.

It will be hard to find a match for Din Tai Fung, IMO. But I went to Canaan Taiwanese style restaurant quite a few times with my friends in Artesia. It is a shorter drive than to Arcadia, and besides the dumplings, their green onion pancake, and the fried cakes with beef and chives are very good too. I like their dishes becos they are not very salty and the rating is A. Their address is 11610 1/2 South Street, Artesia. If you get lost, their # is 562-809-8369. BTW, they have weekend breakfast too. ;-)

It was a complete surprise to have authentic tasty delicious dumplings at the shopping center off Jeffrey and Trabuco, it's called TriValley Restaurant, in the Kohls shopping center, next to Quizno's, La Salsa, Albertson's. Lots of Chinese families enjoying the dishes in the outside patio dining area. Very good, and a surprise to see it there!

Dunno of any in the OC.. but def some in San Gabriel Valley.

Luscious Dumpling is quite simple and the fillers are quite packed with the good stuff, flavorful and fresh. It's family owned and operated. Have to get there before noon-ish for lunch or 6PM for dinner, b/c they do sell out for the day.

I was not that impressed with their dumplings

I heard that their sam bui gai is good though.

I have heard a lot of good reviews about the authenticity of Trivillage as well

I tried it last weekend with mixed review. Driving the long distance to a hole in the wall destination was not rewarding for us. The dumplings were excellent but not good enough to offset the bad ambiance. The Chowmein and Beef noodle soup were not the chef's specialties. The price was cheap however the cost exceeded the cash in my wallet. The place only accepts cash. I desperately seek the nearest bank to get cash while I left my wife there as potential dish washer collateral.

She can't understand a word of Mandarin and she was the only white in the restaurant as the waitress pressuring her to pay by collecting all the plates except for the foam cups for tea. The patrons in line were giving her the dirty look thinking "you are done eating and get the hell out".

Due to the small place customers waiting sat on the empty chair at our table next to my wife while we were eating. In American culture that was very rude.

There were as many flies as customers due to the frequent opening of the door. The people inside clearly exceeded the maximum occupancy load.

I hurried back as the knight with cash rescued my bride from the dungeon of dumplings.

Din Tai Fung although is much more expensive but the ambiance, modern decor and spaciousness made the dining experience much more rewarding. Futhermore it has the cleanest bathroom and an "A" rating.

We could not find the dumpling store and Hong kong Market was no longer there. We went to the market across the street but could not find "Shun Fat" sign. We found "S F market" and bought the various brands of dumplings. We like one of the brands so we went back and stocked our freezer full. The brand is Mei Shen made locally in City of Commerce.

Thank you Momo for the recommendation.

Canaan is very good.

I don't think Trivillage in Irvine is "authentic". It is a "surprise" to find the flavor just so so not as described by others.

In the same shopping center as the defunct Hong Kong Supermarket in Rowland Heights is a place called "Supreme Dragon." Their specialty is Chinese dumplings and are probably the best in Rowland Heights. S F Market across the street mainly caters to the Sinovietnamese community so they probably won't have good northern Chinese food like dumplings. S F is where I buy materials for my Vietnamese spring roll roll-it-yourself parties.
