We are expecting baby #2 and are in the market for a new/used car... Any suggestions?  We already have a full size SUV... Am thinking of a smaller SUV or roomier sedan.  Anyone have experience with Audi Q5 or BMW X3?  Something with better gas mileage would be a plus... Our SUV is a guzzler!

Been eyeing the Jag XJL (long wheelbase for the extra room for kids).

SUV, maybe Infinity QX60 Hybrid?

Congrats on the new addition!

For a smaller SUV I really like the Cayenne or the Touraeg.  Fit and finish is amazing.

If you want something no as pricey with relatively good trunk space, the Prius V is good.

You can do everything you mention without ever leaving your keyboard.  It'll massively save you time to narrow it down to a few cars versus the horde of vehicles out there.

More importantly, it saves you the hassle of dealing with the LA Auto show crowd.  JMO, not LA's finest.

You're funny, Tyler. I'm guaranteed at least one laugh per day when I read TI since you've joined.

If you're considering a small SUV, I would also consider getting a wagon.  They have similar trunk space (you lose a bit in height but depending on the wagon, some have more).  Our current wagon has more trunk space than our old x3.  And since it's a wagon - it'll drive better too and get better gas mileage!  If you like the X3, I would consider test driving the 3 series wagon that comes in diesel.

+1 for the 43mpg hwy BMW 328d wagon.

Minivan FTL.
Fixed!
If you ever decide to have mini-USCs... you will understand.

If that's the case, oh, I am SOOO buying this for Trojan when he has a baby!

Love the discussion.

In terms of functionality a minivan wins hands down, but I can't bring myself to drive one yet.. Maybe if we ever have a third kid. ;)

Hadn't considered a wagon--good idea actually.

I figured the Prius would be too small, but I have actually seen a few of them lately around town with carseats, so apparently it's working for some!

I used to love going to the auto show, but have stayed away in recent years due to crowds as well (getting claustrophobic in my middle age!).  Definitely agree it would be the ideal place to go to take a quick look at cars across multiple brands.

I think the cayenne is a bit outside the budget (as is the Tesla Model X with falcon wings my husband was eyeing).  :). Good looking cars though... If only second baby didn't also mean second childcare expense.

You know...  the best selling SUV in America, year after year, is the Honda CRV. It must have the right combination of qualities people are looking for. It's also among the 10 best selling of all vehicles. You mentioned a compact SUV, and mentioned not wanting a gas guzzler. Check, check.
