Anyone out there that has done car racing in So Cal? I can only find a few tracks North of LA.

I'm more looking for something that would teach racing techniques and track your times, not so much try to pass driver and strach my car.

Any info would be appreciated.

google:

AAA speedway

Spring Mountain Raceway, Pahrump, NV

Willow Springs Raceway

Buttonwilow Raceway

take it from there

you can also support my pipedream of turning the El Toro base site into a world class race track by convincing your mom that it's a great idea

and you can go watch Long Beach GP this weekend

I did several driver's education events thru the BMW CCA and Porsche Club. Both have instructors and would be a good place to start. They have events out at Buttonwillo, Willow Springs, Califorina Speeedway, Spring Mountain, and Las Vegas Speedway in our region. It's a blast and you really do learn a lot in a very controlled environment. Once you get comfortable being on the track you can check out Speedway Ventures and Redline (both dont offer instructors).

Well that's different, you get the "special" instruction. haha I definitely learned a lot from the instructors the first 3-4 times going onto the track, after that you get comfy with the lines and rules.

I did see Redline before, I guess I would need to check it out, but I really wouldn't want anyone to bumb into me (or me into someone). Insurance probably doesn't cover that.

I looked on BMW CCA and it looks like the San Diego chapter has a monthly circuit going on in the Qualcomm stadium parking lot. Not sure how long the t it could be fun. I think I'll start with that and go from there.

Thanks for the input, I had seen those tracks (well Willow Springs and Buttonwillow), however they are at 2h or 2h45 from Irvine. I'm not sure it's reasonable to drive 2-3 hours in the morning, race all day and come back at night. I guess it's either that or you go up the night before.

It doesn't look like there is anything closer to us.

I stand to correct myself, the Auto Club Speedway (aka California Speedway) is 1 hour from Irvine.

Mr NewToOC races and we usually get a hotel near Buttonwillow or Willow Springs and make it a weekend. Unfortunately we have yet to find a decent hotel near either location.

You usually don't see 168 mph in dirt racing, but I have taken my old focus to some cross country sprints. Its done quite well, I was VERY suprised.

Fontana is expensive.

I'm more concerned about waking up at 4 AM, drive 3 hours, get there, race 2 hours being tired. Then drive back for another 2-3 hours. I could do it, I was mostly trying to find a better alternative. Making it a weekend trip is a definite alternative.

Look out for Team Lexus in Bull Run.

These girls rock!

Here is what you should do....drive up the night before the event and get a cheap hotel room like Motel 6 so that way you are fresh and ready to race. BMW CCA and Porsche Club have two type of events....auto-cross and driver's education. Auto-cross is where they hold it at a location that has a huge open parking lot and they set up cones to create a mini road course. There is only one car out on the track at a time and you race against the clock to get a lower time. It is cheaper than a driver's education event. A driver's education event is where the club rents the entire track for the event. The drivers are typically broken up into 4 groups (from advanced to students). You get four 4-minute sessions out on the track and you will have an instructor most all of the time in the passanger seat. In between your track time, you will have driver's meeting and class instruction. You will get feedback from the instructors on your strengths and weaknesses. A lot of the certified instructors do advanced racing like club car racing so they really know how to handle most cars. Usually each group has about 15-20 people and there are strict rules about passing cars and there is no racing allowed (you will be kicked off the track if you start racing with someone). Both events will require that you have a snell approved helmet. It's a lot of fun and you definitely learn a lot about how your car handles extreme situations and how you should react. I might pick up a used M3 later on this year if I land a full-time job and if I do I plan on hitting up the track events again. Definitely start out with BMW CCA (you will have to join the BMW CCA club to participate but you do not need to have a BMW to go to the events) as it is more structured than Porsche Club and you get more hands on instructor input. Once you feel more comfy on the track then go to some of the Porsche Club events (they tend to be cheaper than the BMW CCA events). Let me know if you have any other questions.

Yup, they sure do!

I think I'll do the Rally on 4/25 with BMW CCA LA Chapter and the Autocross the next day at the California Speedway.

I have a BMW, but it's a convertible so I've been told I can't do the actual courses, only the autocross... I'll see if people have been able to find way to race with a convertible. One of my friend has an M3, I'll see if he would let me race his car...that would be so much fun!

Thanks everyone for the info and I'll let you know how it goes.

Depends on the club, but you might have to instead a roll cage or at the very minimal get one of those hard top shells.

Wait... you own a bimmer, and you are asking questions about the track... here? Roo... google is your friend. Go to bimmerforums, and learn from the IR's of bimmerland. I should smack you around a bit to prepare you for bimmerforums, you think we are harsh... Just use the search function there first if you think my reaction is bad here. There are some great guys and gals there who know more about bimmers than the general public, kinda like how some of us know more about housing. Just stay away from off topic there... it can suck you in. I don't want to lose you too.
