Summer is right around the corner and I wanted to do a little camping. I have been to Sequoia but wanted to know if there was something more closer (less than a 2 hour drive). I know there some outdoorsy people here. Do you have a favorite spot?

Obama town hall tickets at Costa Mesa?

I've had a lot of fun camping on Catalina Island. There are places to camp with spectacular views. The roaming Bison can be a little unnerving in the middle of the night though, if you camp in the mountains.

CALICO!

The beauty of the desert and the fun of an old west ghost town. God, I love this place.

I second Catalina. I have many great memories from Two Harbors. I like the Little Harbor campground even better though it's harder to get to.

San Elijo in Carlsbad is very cool too though it is almost impossible to book. I recently checked and they appear to be booked on every weekend through the summer.

Last recommendation is in Central California but I will recommend it anyway. Kirk Creek Campground near Big Sur. It's an amazing place.

Check out ReserveAmerica to book a site or for more ideas.

i was gonna mention joshua tree too, then remembered orig ques was for a place within 2 hours drive from irvine...anywhere else fits the description?

Sorry for not following up on this thread. I've driven by Joshua tree before I think its on the way t big bear right? I guess I'm looking for tent camping. Catalina seems nice but how much does it cost to ferry there?

you didn't answer my questions about what kind of camping you are looking for.

there are a lot of places within an hour or two, from mountains (idlywild, big bear) to ocean (san onofre, crystal cove) to desert (cuyamaca).

What sort of terrain are you seeking, Irvinian?

Joshua tree is an hour further east from big bear.

tent camping: mountains-hurkey creek state park, desert-anza borrego,

one cool place, if you don't mind a walk, is crystal cove sp, el moro section. there are campsites on the hill overlooking the sea that are almost always available, but you have to carry your stuff (backpack) three miles up from the parking lot.

Looking to escape city life. A place where you can just hang out with friends have some drinks and chill out in front of a fire. (I just realize as I was typing this, it sounds like Quail Hill Shopping Center hahaha)

Shhh! The campgrounds at CC State Park are the best kept secret in Orange County!

Oh, and if you aren't carrying your pack 3 miles to the camp site, you might as well sleep in an RV.

I've backpacked Yosemite, so 3 miles in low elevation should be a breeze. Im actually looking for a place to drink and hang out. Its going to be an all boys thing.

How about middle California.

Upper Kern River. This is above Johnsondale. Still a little cool

up there. But this place is a kick. Perfect for camping with the guys and getting

out of the city. Its a bit of a haul and its at about 5000 Feet. But loads of fun.

It wont let me just use theyoutube embed link feature.

Second choice would be a backpack trip into the Sespe Wilderness behind Ojai

There walk is all uphill. Ater the first mile you try to lighten the load by drinking some of the beer, after the second mile you realize that you haven't changed the total load, just weight distribution. When you get there, you realize that there isn't enough beer left.
