Being single and part of the community?

Hi guys,

Looking for advice! I'm single and Irvine is, well, a very family-oriented community. Since I won't be getting involved with the schools or Little League or anything, is there a good way to still be part of the community? Any good things to volunteer for? Other ways?

Just to be clear I'm not asking how to meet men with this question. I'm happy alone. I'm truly just looking for ways to get involved with things outside my work.

I was raised Catholic, and while I don't practice, if there is a good Catholic Church around here that has good groups and volunteer programs or some such, I'd love to hear about it.

Local elementary schools are in desperate need of volunteers if you are interested in helping the little ones. You do not need to have school age children. Just contact the school secretary.

I tried Habitat for Humanity but they made me get up at 6am on a Saturday, so that's enough of that nonsense :-)
 
This used to be one of my regular hangouts.

It is definitely not for everyone. I remember they required new volunteers to go through a 7-hour a day orientation for a whole week.
 
I just started attending ballroom dance classes... but then again, i was doing it before I came here. its a great hobby and you meet alot of nice people. its just not a cheap hobby.

Outdoor activities are a great way to meet people. The people you meet are others who aren't too busy to have fun. Many of the people are also looking for some type of human connection. Softball, sailing, sand volleyball, and surfing (the 4 "S"s of fun %-P) are fun ways to take advantage of the beautiful weather here.

Irvine has good softball leagues. I met my wife on a softball team. Join a co-ed team. They are more for fun rather than competition. Almost every co-ed team has trouble finding enough women to consistently show up. You don't even have to know how to play. I started a team once with the motto, "You don't have to be good; you just have to be." I have started, coached, and played on teams from work, school, and an apartment complex. If you can't find one to join, start one. It doesn't take much more than a good attitude.

I've had friends that took surfing and sand volleyball lessons/classes. They had a blast.

OCC and UCI both offer sailing classes. I took sailing classes from UCI several times and loved it.
 
You could try to perfect your deadily ninja skills and go with a shooting club. But you have to have a certain mindset for that.

Anyways good luck and don't work too hard.

Hey 4waller, I'd never even seen this thread before!

Half a year later, I'm going to weigh in on the original question. My dad likes to walk or run in some of the fine Irvine parks on Saturday mornings. Being a North Tustin resident, this is devious because he doesn't even pay the tax to support such recreation! (I learned to be cheap from somewhere!). Anyway, on these walks or runs, he meets many people, and he even socializes with them and does stuff like get coffee with them, gets invited to stuff they all do at their Irvine dwellings and performs their weddings. If, you know, 60 year old guy can make friends with the people half his age without even trying, there is hope for you! He also spoke of one of the guys who is about 30 and, like you, is single and not looking to date. You two would be perfect for each other! Time to break out of those 4 confining walls and meet the friendly folks of Irvine! (Assuming you didn't any of that in the last half year).
 
The City of Irvine is always putting out community class brochures, maybe sign up for an art class or something. I agree with the hiking clubs, there's lots of stuff going on and plenty of places to go around...
