Bought a 5G tank off Amazon, gonna get the gravel and decor today and get the fish tomorrow.  Our first pet of the family.  Kid is really excited.  Hopefully the fish won't die right away.

Tank comes with LED lightning, so if you pick the right fish, it will glow in the dark!

Get some cheap and hardy fish first. You need them to condition the aquarium for first few weeks in order to get the beneficial bacteria level up and water quality right.  Otherwise, most fish will not do well.

My business partner is a avid aquarium enthusiast and currently we have 7 aquarium in my office.  Setting up new aquarium is kind of complicated and tricky at first.

New tanks are generally broken in by adding a few hardy fish and simply waiting out that first monthhttp://www.bestfish.com/breakin.html

Enjoy you aquarium. :)

I always wanted to get an aquarium. But the thought of it falling during an earthquake has prevented me from buying it.

Instead if an aquarium, I'll get a water feuture for my backyard. Not the same, but really easy to take care of.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your aquarium.

@Inc, thanks for the tip, take that into consideration, don't want to keep flushing Nemo down the toilet.

@eyephone  how bout a koi pond?  probably a bigger PITA upkeep versus an indoor aquarium, but a nice feature in the backyard.  Especially with the iPac shoebox size yards:  a nicely presented koi pond might do the trick

Here we go:

rinsed the gravel, rinsed the plastic plants, rinsed the lighthouse, pour in the room temperature tap water, now all we need is the fish.  Per Inc's link above and research online, gonna start with 1 hardy fish, and slowly add the others.

Going back to Petco tomorrow, funny, lived here for so long, but never walked into Petco, ever.  I might even get a pet turtle!

I used to have a 12 gallon nano reef tank.  Loved that thing.  But, it was such a chore with the water changes and maintenance.  Also was a money pit with all the coral I was buying.  But, I loved looking at the clownfish and coral.  Eventually sold it off cuz I got tired of the maintenance.  I think reef tanks are easier to keep nowadays with LED lighting.  Back then, it was basically CF or halogen which made the tank too hot.

I still think ps9 is trying to start his own 99 Ranch so his meals the freshest they can be.

If he starts posting pictures of his backyard grilled seafood... we will know the truth.

Actually not a big fan of fish, but a shrimp or lobster tank...yum

Just came back from Petsmart, the one at Tustin Market is the place to buy fish.  They have cheapie mini gold fishes for like 29 cents.  Shelves are nicely stocked, good lighting, a wall of aquariums to display.  Fish dude was pretty helpful and seems to know what he's doing.  Contrast that to Petco's (Culver) aquarium section, empty displays, less tanks, super bright store lighting, and the guy helping us was the stores dog trainer.  Petco is the Walmart of pet supply store, Petsmart is more Costco/Whole Foods

I think those cheapy gold fishes are the feeder fish.  But if you want to use them to condition your new tank, they're perfect.

Man, one in fishy heaven already, another has disappeared, maybe got sucked up into the filter?

Regarding the comment about getting more than 1 fish, just fyi -- if you buy a Beta, you're supposed to keep it solo if it's a male. They are very aggressive, fighting fish and will cannibalize each other. They do this thing with flared gills and a shaking body to make themselves appear like they are big, bad fish to intimidate the other fish. To be healthy, it needs to be relaxed by being alone. Some fish owners do put more than one beta together but I wouldn't recommend it. You can, however, get a mirror for the fish and use it from time to time. He will see himself in the mirror and do the fight dance, thinking it's another fish on his turf. Just take it away after a few minutes so he can resume his normal routine.

About disappearing, check in hidden places including down by the rocks, behind any plants, and even up behind the filter. Fish like feeling guarded especially when they sleep. They will look for any hiding place especially if they are not giving a house. (I see you have a house, I just can't see how big it is.)

Didn't get any betas

Got 1 barb, couple tetras, mostly friendly fish.  Though one of the tetras is a bit territorial and claimed the middle of the bowl and the rest of the fish hides in the edges.  Might kick the bully out myself if they don't get along.  As for the missing fish, last I saw, half of it was kinda sucked into the filter, took the filter out today, no fish anywhere, so probably eaten by the others, though they are about the same size, so unlikely.
