Anybody's kid made it to Ivy league? So many I know didn't make it. Good grades, lot of volunteering in the third world, piano, martial arts and foreign language didn't help. Hearing a lot of talk about Asians becoming victims of 'reverse discrimination'. (not sure about the use of the word).

From what I heard when I was applying to the Ivy League schools in my day, many of the spots were already reserved for the legacy kids, the kids that went to the "right" private schools on the east coast, and the kids with influentual parents.  I believe that today the acceptance rate is about 1/2 to 1/3 of what it used to be when I applied.

Pasadena City College's top honor students have guarantee admission to neighboring Cal Tech.  IVC's top students have guarantee house down payments from neighboring parents or in laws.

Haha! Can you claim reverse discrimination at IVC and PCC?

Would kids from government corruption and entrepreneurial communism families be considered legacy kids?

Depends if they greased the right palms.  ;)

Sadly to say that you are asking a good question in the wrong forum. The posters here are from the Atari or Transformer generation and one member from the Texting generation. None of them are mature enough to have children attending IVY schools.

If you post your question on a piece of paper in those filthy Chinese restaurant restrooms then you might get better answers.

Here is a quote from famous Confucius proverbs:  Wealth and success don't transcend to the 3rd generation. The offsprings of Atari generation will likely attend IVC and UCI.

that isnt true.  caltech does not have any reserved spots at PCC and simply has a pathway for PCC students to attend caltech much like UCLA and Santa Monica CC.  it doesnt mean jack as the students still have to meet the admission requirements and compete with everyone else trying to transfer from other CCs

look at JLin, who needs grades.. if I ever have a son, bball or even baseball..  heck even hockey if that means a full scholarship...  We need more asian americans in sports, no not tennis.. I think baseball would be a good fit..  there are more Japanese ball players in the majors then american born asians... look at that mutant Yu Darvish.. he's the perfect blend of Super Irvine and Marukai.. we got lots of those in Irvine.

Here is the document that specifies the unique transfer program between Cal Tech and PCC
http://www.pasadena.edu/studentservices/counseling/documents/cal-tech.pdf

this doesnt say anything about guaranteed admission, just provides the list of courses that PCC students should take should they wish to be considered for admission. they even state that admission is highly selective and therefore students should also include regular GE courses required at other public universities/colleges

when we went to tokyo our tour guide mentioned baseball was the #1 sport in japan. baseball/tennis are your best bets for increased asians in american sports. you can pretty much forget basketball or football, white people have it hard enough trying to break into those sports. asians lack the good genetics for height/size/strength. plus you guys all have small peepees

Ivy League admission is not a prerequisite for someone to be proud of their children. :)
You must not be Hispanic... oh wait... I think that's Asian. Or maybe Caucasian.

But I agree... if my kids can fend for themselves when they grow up... that's good enough for me. Would be nice if they made billions so they can put me in a luxury old folks home... but not necessary.

Thought so. Most have children in elementary school. We are nowhere near college either. Curiosity, that's all :-)
But there should be second hand stories to share, no?
