Tell your wife, don't feel bad. It is time for her to take a break. I got laid off a few months ago, now still looking for a job..

I was laid off late '01 in the tech downturn, but had a job offer the next day from one of our partners. However, I didn't enjoy what I was doing and really needed to find myself again. I ended up taking 9 months off and taking on some debt. There's always a part of me that looks back and says that if I had taken and just bought the darned condo that mom wanted me to buy, my net worth would be different today.

However, I really did use the time to find myself again. I travelled quite a bit and finally decided to go back and finish my degree. The degree actually really doesn't make a difference in my value, but I got so much out of really learning again and being interested in things. Granted I was single and living with roommates, no car payment, etc...however, taking the time to think about what I really wanted from life was incredible and ultimately I ended up with a great job.

My husband (fiance at the time) lost his job in early '06 and got a settlement. I knew he really wanted to write another novel and my travel schedule was so crazy that I didn't have time to think about the upcoming wedding. So, he took 9 months off, planned the wedding and wrote the next novel while also trying to get the first one published. Neither are published, but it meant a lot to my husband and ultimately he ended up with a great job for him.

I think if you can afford to take some time off, you should really consider it. Somehow, the right job comes along if you follow that path. I know that's irrational, but I really believe it.
 
A long time ago in a galaxy far away I choose to get into the new home sales industry because there was no stigma to being unemployed since at that time we were "hired guns" and went from tract to tract often with time off in between. I actually wanted to have breaks in employment to do long distance offshore sailing. I would spend several months at a time on sailboats cruising up and down both sides of Baja and a did a long trip from Honolulu to San Fransisco.

Those were some of the best experiences of my life and led me to be very independent in my lifestyle. These times can provide a balance between experiences and ownership of things.

A chance to travel and experience new challenges while young should be explored. It is easy to be trapped as a consumer and spend all of your efforts in obtaining items that actually have little value when compared to living a free lifestyle for short periods.

I also travelled through out Europe during the early 1970's as it was a goal of many people of that era. Would you believe there was a series of books titled "Europe on $5.00 a Day". Awwww, the good old days.

Well. Clearly none of you people have children!

In the highly unlikely occurrence of a layoff in my world, I would start working my network that evening to land a new job ASAP. Meantime I would try to do some consulting. Seems pretty common in the drug and device arena that what firms don't hire from a permanent perspective, they hire on a contract basis.

I would walk dogs. I would tutor schoolkids. I would get creative and do whatever I needed to do to keep my son's life as normal and stable as possible.

And if I didn't have a child? Well, I wouldn't be working at my current job, and I probably wouldn't even be in this country.

Colorado Springs, CO:

Wow, that mountain is gorgeous!

Hey, look everyone, it snowed a foot in the last hour. I'm sure glad I bought that snow shovel!

What do all these signs about logs in the surf mean?

Tsunami evacuation zone, you mean like Indonesia-style tsunami?

Wow, it's been raining for 3 straigh months.

60 mile-per-hour winds with 80 mph gusts during a "moderate" winter storm, with a foot of snow and ice, and surf filled with frozen logs? Don't they call those hurricanes?

Now, both of those places are lovely at some points in the year. I'm sure the people that live there love it for some personal reason. But it would take both halves of the TARP to get to me live in either one again.

Troop, we are finally are in Mass. We forgot how nice people are out here. We just moved in to our new rental and we've already had two neighbors come over with food. One neighbor brought a basket of brownies and cookies and another neighbor brought home-made chicken soup (yum, yum). We were greeted with one of the neighbors shoveling our steps! We opened the door and he said that he thought he should help us shovel since he thought we wouldn't have any shovels yet. My husband went out to work with him, and then they both came in and watched sports on TV. It's like they knew each other for years.

It's good to be home. :)
