Any plans for when you get laid off?

Well, we all knew it was coming but I'm surprized that the economy crashed and burned as fast as it did..

We got a an e-mail from our CEO today and of course, things don't look good, why should our Corporation be any different to any other? And lets face it, it's only a matter of time until all of us here in the US are laid off...

So instead of sitting there moping we all started to make plans at work, mine are:

1. Go on a long Cycling Tour, well, not that long, probably up the west coast untill I get sick of sitting on a Bike, maybe SF?

2. Drive across the US to New York and hop on a Plane.

3. I've always loved Amsterdam and Paris so I'll probably live there, or somewhere in Europe.

Does anyone else have plans for when they get laid off?

From someone who was let go last week, take a few days off to decompress. Then tap into your network and look for any new possible opportunities. I'm going to Vegas for the holidays and then go to Hawaii for 4-5 days since I haven't taken a real vacation in years. When I get back I'll be hitting the payment hard looking for a job and hopefully be nice and recharged. Sorry to hear about the layoff, but keep your head up.

Well I'm hoping that doesnt happen since I just got the job. However if it does, I really wouldn't care. I would just go back to my previous job...

I'm going shooting!

Ok, target.... PAPER targets. Maybe dance a little more and take a little bit of time. Historically, I've waited a month then immediately got a job. Currently there are lots of contractor jobs about. I would just go to one of those and get paid 3x what I make....

Anyways good luck

Sorry to hear about your job, Peter (and all the others).

If it happened to me, I'd move the f*ck out of California. I've had it with this state.

I'm thinking I might take six months or so to hang out with my little ones. Do a little Mr. Mom routine for a while... I've never really been unemployed, with my last two job changes creating double employment for me for a few weeks at a time, so the thought of taking an extended break is really appealing right now.

Then again, not working means not saving for retirement, college educations, and the like, so I don't know if I could will myself to be short-sighted enough to do it.

You are one of the few who KNOWS you aren't getting laid off. What increases during a recession/depression: CRIME. Such job security!

Sounds cold and damp to me... This 40-degree weather has made you nutty skekker.

Thanks for all the replies Guys, by the way, I haven't got my Lay-off notice yet, I work in the strongest Division of one of, if not THE strongest and well run Corporations in the US but what I was trying to say is that if things continue the way they're going everyone in the US will be out of work eventually...

I know my forecast is a little bleak but is it unrealistic?

It is not unrealistic. My company is public and the stock went up almost 700% in 4 years and we were at the top of our industry. Things have gotten so bad the last 3 months, we've already done 10% layoffs and may need to do more if the current trend continues. I share the same fear as you that this could get really ugly and no one is safe.

I've been so lucky, the only time I've been "Laid off" was when I was working 12 mth contract for Boeing, it lasted 18 mths (Untill all the Tooling was built and they started building the Plane) so that wasn't really a lay-off for me but in any case, I took a month off and laid by the Pool/went to the Beach and was offered 2 jobs who started bidding for me within the first week I started applying..

However, things have changed a LOT since then...but a layoff is a good opportunity to think about doing something we'd like to do rather than getting all depressed waiting for it to happen..

The Hardrock is an excellent place to see concerts. There isn't a bad seat in the house. Also, like others, I'm sorry to hear the bad news. I'm sure you will land on your feet.

Thanks usc...

We wont be in vegas for long, nye eve afternoon until new years day at 10am...will you be there over nye?

Btw, my wife was laid off a month ago, she's in the medical field, you think she would beable to find a job, right? But nooo!

[quote author="skek" date=1229652737]Well I am a little nutty, but I could trade my 1400 sq ft tract home for this gem on 2.5 acres outside of Colorado Springs and take some cash out of the deal in the process.

Besides, I've got Nordic blood running through my veins. I wore short sleeves yesterday.</blockquote>
