24 hours @ Hurkey

Ok, so I see that we have a few decedent mountain bikers who frequent this forum. As you might know, the 24 in Hurkey Creek is coming up and I am short a few riders for my 10 man team. Our group of riders usually comes up with a 5 man and a 10 man team. Unfortunately, many of our regulars had things come up this year. The 5 man team is fine, but I have a spot or 2 left on my 10 man team that I dont know I can fill in time.

Its a relay style race and the course is about 11 miles - not too strenuous. Its located about 2 hours from OC in the mountains above palm springs, high enough to be in the pine trees.

The entry fee, once divided by 10, comes out to around ~$110, give or take a few. Ages range between 38-55 (though i am a bit younger). A few guys are bringing their elementry/middle school age kids. Its a great camp site. Day lap times range between 48 min to 65 min. So we have a wide range. I dont care about being competitive against the serious teams, but its fun to have people who are trying to get a personal best.

This is for April 24th weekend. Race is between saturday at noon to sunday at noon. Some come up Friday to get set up and run the course through to get familiar. If youve never done the course before, or raced before, this is the perfect introduction. A 10 man team like this should get you 2 laps in 24 hours (not hard at all), or 3 if you want it.

I'm still waiting to hear from a few last friends-of-friends, but I doubt they'll come through. If you're interested at all, let me know.

That would have been fun. I've been thinking about camping also the the past few weeks. Unfortunately, I am doing my first autocross that Sunday...

Where should I go for a good bike shop?

i like The Path, in tustin on 1st and B.

Mojo, that's funny. must be something in the air. One friend of mine just offered me his 8hr solo slot, as he has to work. If only I hadn't been such a slacker lately...

I'm partial to JAX on culver/5fwy (or walnut). I've heard good things about the Path too, though.

Well, our team eventually ended up being a 6-man team. haha. We each did a few laps and by midnight, we decided volunteer basis to finish it off. We were in 2nd right up until our 12th lap when the wheels fell off. All in all a fun weekend. Our branch 5-man team took 2nd in their category. Looking forward to doing it again in September.... though hopefully with fewer cancellations!

I did 2. ha ha! :48 (stuck behind a slow moving 20 biker train for the first 3 miles, halfway through the meadow by the time i finished passing all of them, plus a minor mechanical stop), and :53 at night. After that, we were all a bit demoralized by our lack of teammates and just called it. Also, the vendor who regularly rents out lights didnt show up, so 3 of our 6 were without lights. I had to wait after getting the baton on my night lap while we transferred my bar and helmet lights over to me from the previous rider. I think the light hassle had a lot to do with us just going to bed around 1. We still had fun though.

It was somewhere in the high 30's during my late lap. The guys who went out around 12-4 were complaining of their camel back hoses freezing shut. I think it dipped to high 20's at the lowest.

And you better believe we had a fire. I couldnt imagine going the weekend without one.

This September I'm going to be collecting cash up front and we're going to shoot for 24+ laps. Or at least thats the plan.

cash up front is the key. not so much for the $, but because people are more likely to actually show up.

congrats on the fast times, those are excellent.

(i'm a slow poke, my times are usually in the 60s)
