2 Orange County schools named prestigious, national Blue Ribbon winners

Sept. 29, 2015 Updated 12:16 p.m.

Two Orange County schools are among 335 nationwide named Blue Ribbon winners today by the U.S. Department of Education.

Middle College High School, a competitive public prep school that allows dual enrollment in Santa Ana College, and New Horizon School, a private Islamic elementary school in Irvine, received the honor.

The Education Department found them to be ?exemplary high-performing schools.?

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a video message to the winners:

?This honor recognizes your students' accomplishments and the hard work and dedication that went into their success. Your journey has taught you collaboration ... and strong relationships in school and with your community.

?You represent,? he continued, ?excellence ? in vision, in implementation and in results ? and we want to learn as much as we can from you.?

The Education Department will honor Middle College High School and New Horizon School as well as the other 284 public and 49 private schools during a November ceremony in Washington, D.C.

More than 8,000 schools have received the prestigious Blue Ribbon recognition since the program began in 1982.

By winning the awards, Middle College High and New Horizon each will receive a plaque and be able to place a Blue Ribbon flag design on their buildings.
