NYPD did a study and found that trained officers engaging assailants at 0-2 yard distance only had 38% hit rate.  Something to think about if you had to engage robbers inside the living room.  The best defense is not having to engage assailants in the first place -- alarms and dogs are good deterrents.

Look up "Massad Ayoob" on youtube.  He has some good videos on home defense, and how to interact with police officers.

For home defense, shotguns are the way to go. Much easier to aim in a panic situation and ammo that is less likely to over penetrate.

Shooting in front of Empire State Building in 2012. Two cops unload 16 shots from a distance of less than 10 feet. 9 bystanders get injured. They hit the target 7 times so at least somewhat better than 38%.
 
In the (in)famous North Hollwood shootout of 1997 between a swarm of LAPD officers and 2 bank robbers, an LAPD officer emptied his Baretta 92 at one of the robbers from less than ten feet and missed every shot, with most shots landing short of the robber. Bottom line is having a gun isn't good enough, you have to know how to use it properly.  Crazy Asian Lady is probably a better shot than most cops.
 
I never thought that action movies are accurate.  007, Bourne, Rambo, cobra, etc. all spraying bullets but never hit their targets...  I'm goin to dust off my duck hunt controller and practice.

Alarm system, security camera, security door, large barking dog(s), noisy neighbors, reinforced doors/locks/bolts, etc. will offer some degree of deterrence.

Hardcore home invasion robbers will have already assessed their targets and arrive with overwhelming force.  They don't care if you have an alarm, they'll hold a gun to your head and make you turn it off.  As soon as they crash through the door or window, they'll come after you.

I live in a cul-de-sac with noisy neighbors and loud barking dogs (my neighbors called the cops on the cable guy).  They're my first line of deterrence before I have to grab the speed loader.

Check this out, martial arts guy takes on two guys during home invasion robbery. They pointed a gun to his head, busts martial arts and both struggle for the gun. One robber jets, but the other robber that lost the gun wanted to keep fighting. (Dumb move by the robber)

Then the martial arts guy shoots the guy in the leg. Shoves the robber in the pool.


 
...for those who use their AR's for home defense, Insight indoor range in Artesia has frangible .223 in stock.  They allow range purchased FMJ .223 M-Th and frangible .223 only on Fri-Sun. The Fiocchi .223 frangible is $35/box of 50 at the range.  Frangible bullets are made of compressed copper powder.  The ammo is lead-free with reduced penetration and ricochet.  There were some manufacturing issues with the Fiocchi frangible 223 back in 2012, hopefully it has been resolved.

Frangible non-lead 9mm and .38 special are also avail at LAX Ammo (now attached to LAX range via walkway).  "PMC Green" is avail on the LAX range side at higher price.  I have personally tested the frangible 38 spl and they are only slightly less accurate than Aguila on a Ruger.
