I think the parents of the boy paid the parents of the girl $300,000 so their son wouldn't get the death penalty.

I guess it does PAY to flee back to China.  I watched the CNN video and article.  If you'll notice: Under Chinese Criminal Law, life imprisonment could be commuted to no less than 13 years in jail.

That means, if they bribe the officials, he could get out after year 13.  That is way better than spending prison in the US for 25+ years getting raped.

If you'll remember, the Rowland Heights torture/beating of non-status immigrants got 10 years prison and they're serving that time in a US prison.  The father of the perpetrator also tried to bribe the victims family.  He got caught by detectives.
In the PRC, you get one day off your sentence for each day of good behavior so if you behave yourself, you only have to serve half your sentence.  This is why "life" means 13 years with good behavior.  This is to encourage good behavior in prison.  This doesn't apply if you are a critic of the Communist Party in which case you will apparently be given a battery of heath tests and be placed on an organ harvest list where you will wait until a well heeled transplant candidate needs your organs.

"The victim?s family hoped their daughter?s killer would get the death penalty for the crime and had accepted a civil compensation of two million yuan, or $308,000, CNN reported.

?We were at least expecting a death sentence with reprieve even though we had accepted the compensation,? Chunsheng Shao, the victim?s father, told CNN.

?But what can we do? We can only accept the judgement.?

A life sentence in China could commute down to 13 years in jail, CNN reported""

IMO if they wanted death penalty, maybe they should not have accepted civil compensation & settlement.  But we don't know if there were other factors at work behind the scenes.
