Love the Old Ship. I haven't had their sausages, though. Their service, at least in the afternoons / evenings is not always the best. Perhaps I would need to be a regular for better service - and perhaps that is "authentic" service.

I recall the first time I was served a fish with head and tail attached. It was very hard to eat it, until I did. A well prepared sole almondine will let you overlook a lot of things, even the fish staring back at you.

I love Japanese and Korean versions of typically European and American pastries. They are exactly as you describe them. I get the secular celebration of Christmas in Japan, but I don't understand why they celebrate with cake.

I am curious to see how Spanish wines fare going forward. Our economic slump is bad, but nothing compared to theirs, and I know a number of wineries expanded or were bought for high prices. I had also heard that many recent vintages were very good, but from 2007 forward, not so much.
