IUSD does away with traditional math path

I did.  I have very mixed feelings about the whole thing.  I guess time will tell. IUSD changed the criteria on 6th graders advancement into "enhanced" math path.  Instead of placement test there will be 4 categories. Student would have to meet the threshold for 3 of them in order to advance.

Is this the common core grading ?

My middle school child had a case similar to what you described in Language arts.  Teacher gave him 80% for an essay because the date was written incorrectly.  It was supposed to be spelled out. Something ridiculous like that. Teacher is not very good though (luckily only 1 out of 4 - the rest...

Architect and builder recommendation for Irvine home addition

We used David Gill with David Gill Construction to do our addition. He was always at the jobsite and did not miss even 1 day. We were happy with the outcome. Google him - if not - pm for phone number

Back in Russia where I grew up Geometry would be taught starting in 6th grade.  It would start with simple stuff gaining more and more complexity.  The problem with US math curriculum is cramming too much information in such a short period of time.  Besides, Geometry uses a totally different set...

Abcd, Could you tell me a little more about the difficulties your friends kids had in geometry?  Do you feel they were not ready due to their age or background?  Is geometry in middle school has the same curriculum as geometry in high school? Just curious, since we enrolled my son in algebra in...

US Appliance (for all appliance purchases)

I bought all of my appliances online since the price was substantially lower with online retailers from the east coast. Free delivery, no tax, coupons and the same rebates as with local retailers. All of my appliances came directly from the manufacturer.  My microwave/fan combo came in damaged...

In order to move further from Algebra next year student has to get overall grade B or higher as well as teacher recommendation.  B- or lower will warrant repeat of the same class next year.  If a student passes Algebra in 7th grade he/she will be able to take Geometry in 8th grade.  Again, the...

Classes are combined.  8th grade CC math class had about 70/30 of 8th grade/7th grade students.  The same goes for Algebra.  In Algebra class there are majority of 8th graders and a few 7th graders. My son is in Algebra.  He passed the placement test though.  As a parent I'm not sure I would...

Common Core math placement chronicles... My son is in a year round school and his school year started on July 29th, a few days ago. Math placement results as well as last waivers for the math placement were still not finalized until end of that first day of school.  That resulted in constant...

I took my son today for AAT testing to RSJ middle school. I thought that after the announced testing waiver there would be just a few students taking the test, but the huge room where the testing took place was completely full.  I would estimate at least 100 kids taking the test. Interesting how...

By the way, This is a quote from Mark Sontag's e-mail: "You have the option of having your child re-take either the MSMAT or AAT this summer. Alternatively, if you don?t want your child to do the re-take, you can fill out the attached waiver form and return to me. This only applies to students...

However, if the tests are cancelled, why wouldn't the district release the tests they gave this year? In fact I hope they do it. If the district delegated the responsibility of selecting the appropriate math class for the student to his/her parents they might as well forward to us, the parents...

Thank you for posting this info.  What an unexpected turn of events!  It's too bad the district cave in and waived the tests.  I'm lost now at what to do with my 6th grader... We were supposed to have the test on July 21st

I'm frustrated not because my son did not pass the test, but because potentially he might be wasting a couple of years on some BS during his math class in school.  I'm not saying he is a genius, but he is interested in math and gets excited when learning new concepts and moves forward.  When...

My kid also did not pass this test.  He is a 6th grader who took per algebra class this year with 7th graders.  He missed probability section because he was unfamiliar with a specific "box and whiskers" method that was taught in 6th grade.  He was supposed to go to Algebra class next year but...
