I wouldn't give a plug nickle if the complex is on contaminated land. The nearby Smith Ball fields were developed on top of the old Knik Landfill. Does anyone have information on land-use of either of these properties? Our organization, People Investigating Toxic Sites, has files of many sports...
When I posted my first message I didn't know the exact location of the dump. After documenting the location of the dump and the years that it operated, I decided to post my updated information for the residents that live in the area. I'm surprised that there is little concern from locals about...
The Christmas Tree farm on the northwest corner of Santiago Canyon and Silverado Canyon is on top of a portion of the closed Silverado Canyon Disposal Station #9. This municipal waste dump operated from 1947 to 1967. Could gases from this dump have ignited and/or fueled the Santiago Canyon...
I quoted the FEMA report to show that combinations of materials in a landfill can result in spontaneous combustion. Methane does not need a spark to set off a fire or explosion. The peak period for spontaneous combustion is in October and November (now). Read the report. Dumps (landfills)...
The following FEMA report explains about the causes and dangers of underground fires in dumps (landfills).
Federal Emergency Management Agency,
United States Fire Administration, National Fire Data Center
May 2002 report
LANDFILL FIRES: Their Magnitude, Characteristics, and...
A dump is listed as being in the same location as where the fire started. I don't know the size of the dump, the years it operated, or what was dumped there. I'm not assuming anything. I just think that gathering information about the dump should be part of the investigation.

I don't know why the closed dump isn't being mentioned as a possible cause of the fire. I did contact the County Fire Department to let them know that a closed dumpsite was at the same location as the origin of the fire. I mentioned methane gas was in most dumps, that it was highly...

This is the California Waste Management site that lists the closed Silverado Canyon Disposal Station #9:
www.energy.ca.gov/pier/renewable/documents/total_landfills_in_ca.xls
The list of closed dumps is quite extensive.

I'm really surprised at all the responses of denial, stupid jokes, baloney and venum. I would suggest doing a little research on dumps and the dangers that they hold. Also do some research on fires that were caused by gases in closed dumps. You'll be surprised at what you dig up (pardon the...
I believe the closed dump that Seraphin is referring to was the Reeve Pit, used by the county, closed in the 1960s, and located near Santiago Blvd. & Santiago Canyon. There is also a listing for the closed Villa Park County Dump at the northwest corner of Villa Park Rd. & Santiago Canyon Rd...
Why do you believe an arsonist was responsible and are not open to another possibility? Gases in dumps migrate underground great distances and fire could come to the surface in many different areas. Are you surprised that there is a dumpsite at Santiago and Silverado Canyons? Are you...
According to reports, the Santiago fire started at Santiago Canyon and Silverado Canyon. The California Integrated Waste Management Board data base of closed dumps lists Silverado Canyon Disposal Station #9 at Santiago Canyon and Silverado Canyon. Most closed dumps generate highly explosive...
