Pfizer saids NO to India
« on: March 30, 2022, 01:07:48 PM »
India is a country with approximately 1.38 billion people (that's 1.38 billion potential customers). India asked Pfizer for an independent safety and immunogenicity study to be conducted in India prior to an Emergency Authorization of their vaccine.  India was concerned with "side effects reported abroad [that] were still being investigated."

Pfizer declined to allow the independent study and pulled their application thereby foregoing the potential 1.38 billion customers.  As a reasoning, Pfizer stated that:  "Pfizer’s application for emergency use authorization was supported with data that shows an overall efficacy rate of 95% with no safety concerns..."

Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya of India provided further reasons why the Indian government didn’t procure the vaccines manufactured by Pfizer and Moderna.  "...Mandaviya said that Moderna and Pfizer had placed a condition before the Indian government that it would only [sell] their vaccines if an indemnity clause is signed.  It means that if there is any side effect or if someone dies after taking the vaccine, then the company will not be held accountable and prosecuted under Indian law."

India does what is best for India...

Why the World’s Largest Democracy Won’t Back Ukraine
Inside the globe’s most awkward diplomatic puzzle.

In some ways, India’s in-between posturing is historically familiar. After all, during the Cold War, it led the global Non-Aligned Movement of countries that chose not to side with either the United States or Soviet Union. But the country has also tried to position itself as a defender of democracy against authoritarian nations in recent years. By sitting on the sidelines of the Ukraine conflict, India may be showing it’s not a reliable ally in that battle.
