Wood stairs - cheap way?

Is it bad to do standard wood on the stairs as opposed to ripping the entire banisters out and doing full planks?  Currently there is carpet in the middle with white wood on the side, where the bannister goes into.  Thinking of doing wood there and leaving the white wood on the side.  Has anyone ever done that?

I have never seen wood stairs where the tread doesn't extend as one piece all the way to the edge.  I guess technically you can do it and try to blend the edges together with sanding and painting, but not sure.

Call Pike Stair Company.  They have always been responsive to my questions about stair systems.  My guess is that what you're asking for won't be much cheaper than just ripping out your current stair system and getting a custom job exactly the way you want, unless you want to do it all on your own as a DIY project.  I definitely think it would look odd to have a wood tread of one stain with the edge left white.

Actually, I think it might look okay if you use white risers too (the front edge of each step).

Tried to google for an image but couldn't find one.

Yes with white risers.  But the tread would be white on the sides, mixed with wood in the middle.  Not sure if anyone has done them and just painted the tread.

I dont think it'll look bad, you just need to make it symmetrical and I agree with white risers. And maybe if you stain the railway of the stairs to match the wood on the stairs it'll look good, a nice contrast.

Check out this great DIY linkhttp://inmyownstyle.com/2011/01/my-foyer-staircase-reveal.html

Also my pic looks okay with whites on the side

Good luck! Post some pics after  :)
