Replace Windows or Adjust Existing Ones?

We've got an older home in Irvine that still have the old-school aluminum (I think) sliding windows. Since dual pane windows did not exist (or were too expensive) at the time the prior owner renovated the home (probably in the 90's), he instead installed DUAL WINDOWS. Yes - two single pane windows after the other. Thus, when we want to open our windows, we have to open 2 sliding windows. I think that some of the windows just need adjusting, as, in some cases, one of the sliders don't close all the way. However, the dual windows work pretty well for sound-proofing, though I am not sure how effective it is in terms of energy efficiency.

My wife hates the way that the old aluminum windows look. I'm not a fan either, but I can live with them. How much can we expect to pay to change out our windows, assuming we want to change out about 10-12 windows throughout the house (is there an average "price per window" that we can expect to pay?).

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for companies that do window installations and/or window repairs/adjustments? We would love to be able to get a better idea of whether we are better off changing the windows (if the dual panes will be substantially better than our dual windows), or if we should have the current ones maintained/adjusted/repaired. It seems like a waste of money to change out windows purely for aesthetic reasons, but if there are functional reasons as well, it is something to consider.

On the OC Register, they claim that the best door and window companies are: (1) A New View Windows & Doors, (2) WinDor, and (3) Dial One Window Replacement Specialists. I have no experience with any of these companies, but would love to hear your feedback (and get any additional recommendations you might have).

Thanks!

I have a good reasonable window guy. (Small business owner)

He did a good solid job. He spoke fluent English and the price was nice.

It was to change old windows with dual pane windows.

PM me if you want the contact.

Thanks for the responses! We're probably a few months from making a decision on the windows, as we have just finished up a small landscaping job, as well as putting up a pool safety fence. eyephone, I will PM you when we're ready to get quotes.

I would second the recommendion on changing them out entirely.
I have a better window/door/glass specialist than WinDor for you, if/when you decide to do the work.

Cost is tiered based on size.  3x4 triple pane vinyl windows cost me around $560 each IIRC, with smaller windows (~1x3) getting down into the $3xx range for the smaller of the 17 we bought.  Installation was verbally quoted @ $100-150 per window.

Yikes, guess I wont be changing out my windows anytime soon.  I thought my neighbor got ripped when he told me it cost him $35K to replace all his windows in his house.  Taking your numbers, $35K is about right.  I am going to have to stick with my single pane.

Mine are specifically for noise abatement, and I'm guessing past the point of diminishing returns for most situations.  Dual panes will probably show good improvements at less $.  I found a spreadsheet with size/cost (my memory is not what it once was).  I recall I rushed to get this order in to beat the planned 5% mfg cost increase the following month.

I know this is an old topic, but does anyone have any window companies they can recommend?  I have 2 sliders and 3 windows I'd like to replace.

TIA!

@club924, we recently received a quote from American Vision Window (seehttp://www.yelp.com/biz/american-vision-windows-orange).They were a referral from my wife's friend, who has also recommended them to other friends, all of whom have been satisfied with the quality and price. @eyephone also sent me a referral, although I have not yet had the opportunity to get a quote from them. from them.

Thanks Ribeye.  American Vision Windows has a pretty good rating on Angie's List.  I was going to contact Metropolitan Windows, American Window Company and California Replacement Windows.
