Question on Renter's deposit

I was wondering how much in punitive damages could you sue a landlord for if he fails to return your deposit 3 wks after you have moved out?

I have read that it could be your deposit plus as much as 2 times your deposit in punitive damages.

i.e. $500 deposit and $1,000 in punitive for a total lawsuit of $1,500

Is this correct? If not, what is? Thanks in advance.

Yes, punitive can be up to twice the amount of the deposit.

If that were to happen to me, I wouldn't go for the full amount of punitive so I could keep the claim under $7,500 and stay in small claims...
