Need to buy a new laptop computer... Help please ;-)

Oscar - How about you???</blockquote>
Does watching graphrix do his banana dance for effenheimer count as an IHB event?

Using your old router should be fine, provided you follow the directions I gave you.

Winex, I never said I was against toddlers having clean handguns. I asked if you also participated in the inherently dangerous act of advising them on the subject since you proposed an equally dangerous solution to a well-intentioned computer novice. Rather than trying to reframe the argument, why not just answer the question?</blockquote>

<blockquote>

When you get your laptop, make sure you change the default channel, set a new router password, set up MAC address filtering to prevent any MAC address but the laptop from getting onto your network. </blockquote>

These instructions??? I have the laptop... it's right next to me charging the battery :cheese: New Toy! New Toy! New Toy! ok, ok... so I bought it for work... but, come on! It's still fun! Just need to learn what the hell I am doing with this wireless thing! Hahahaha!

I'm proud of ya Polish girl, you finally pulled the trigger.

Dig out your wireless router and plug your desktop into it using the ethernet cable (looks like a fat telephone connection). If it's linksys, open up a web browser on your desktop machine and type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar. It should bring up a dialog asking for login and password. If these are still the defaults, you need to change them before you do anything else.

The next step is to change the channel that your wireless channel broadcasts on, the default is channel six. Then save that change before you move on to the next step, which is to name your network and create a network password using WEP security.

Once you have that done, you want to have your laptop look for that network and connect to it with the password. Then in the router screen... find and save the MAC address connected to it. Finally, you want to set MAC address filtering to allow ONLY those MAC addresses in the filter list to connect. Once you do that, your network should be relatively safe from both intereference and unauthorized access from neighbors.

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it. I'm going to be on travel next week.

Besides, it would be impossible for Oscar to argue that a toddler should be able to walk around with a dirty gun.</blockquote>

That's right - EVERY kid should have a gun. What's the matter with you, Oscar? :)

My two little guys....

This picture was for calgun.net they wanted a calculator/kitchen implement and your gun.

Glad to see you "pulled the trigger on a new setup" Here's my two 1911's for my "kids".

Instead of downgrading to XP (which by Winex's discreption sounds like a pain)... just stick with Vista. Uninstall the bloatware and wait until Win7 comes out... much faster and probably just around the corner.

I'm going to give Vista a try... just to see. I have heard some really good things about windows 7... I just hope it doesn't take them years to get it to us!

Many have warned me that loading XP Professional will take a minimum of 4 hours... it seems to embed itself in everything!

I'm hopefully getting my wireless up and running tonight! If all goes as planned I will be surfing the IHB on my 52" LCD by tomorrow! (Man, I need to get a life!) 8-/

Oh, cool! My new laptop has the web-cam and mic all built in!

Skype would be great... but, then I could no longer be "incognito" to all those of you who don't come out to the block parties!!!

I thought it was clear. I believe that everyone should learn how to handle (and clean) firearms at a young age.

Does your TV have 1080P resolution?

ohh make some money!

[quote author="Girl In the OC" date=1236344915]Yep!</blockquote>

That's good. I wouldn't consider using a computer with anything with a lower resolution. But even as is, you will find that image quality suffers. A 1080p TV has a resolution of 1920x1080. The 30" Dell monitor that I am using right now has a max resolution of 2560x1600.

In non-technical terms, what that means is that your TV has a lot less bits of information spread over a larger area than my monitor. If you are just reading text oriented websites, then it probably won't matter too much (though the print won't be as sharp) But image quality won't be as high as if you were using a computer monitor.

My desktop Monitor is the Samsung SyncMaster 225, Which I LOVE! I could not imagine going down to a smaller monitor... But the ability to surf the web and IHB from the couch sure sounds nice :)

That's a nice TV. I looked closely at the Sharp Aquos line, but ended up getting a Panasonic plasma.

You know... I was thinking.... we have a Dining Page, Fitness Page, Off Topic Page, School Page...

I think we are needing a Technology Page... for all of us tech novices to go and get some assistance...

And for all you tech addicts to share your new acquisition's!
