Musicals

*Deep breath - exhale...

Well, my wife's bday is coming up and I can't really think of anything to get her. But I owe her one musical.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a musical? I know she'd like Rock of Ages but that's only playing in NYC(Thank Allah).

Any suggestions? Yes... I blame the Tony's.

Does it have to be playing right now? And, does she enjoy modern or classic musicals? Yes, there is a big difference and yes, I am an expert on the subject. :)

How about <a href="http://montypythonsspamalot.com/LA/?gclid=CKH0xNuh-5oCFSMSagodLU17dg">Monty Pythons Spamalot</a>? I haven't had the opportunity to see it yet but everyone I know who has seen it has given it good reviews

Sup sugarass. Yeah, if you know any playing around mid July, please let me know. Here's some background info... She's seen Grease like 30x.

You don't understand how much I'm dreading this...

Local, cheap, playing now: <a href="http://www.mavericktheater.com/html/reefer.html">http://www.mavericktheater.com/html/reefer.html</a>

A parody and only for those with the "right" sense of humor. Not classic by any means.

OCPAC upcoming shows: <a href="http://www.ocpac.org/home/Content/ContentDisplay.aspx?NavID=510">http://www.ocpac.org/home/Content/ContentDisplay.aspx?NavID=510</a>

Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang, didn't get the best reviews and I'll be skipping it. Fiddler is also not to my taste, but a classic that many people enjoy. I will definitely be seeing Legally Blonde.

Pantages in LA: <a href="http://pantages-theater.com/">http://pantages-theater.com/</a>

Graph and I just saw Dirty Dancing...um...well, if you really liked the movie then you will really like this show. I'll provide a full review upon request.

Ahmanson in LA: <a href="http://www.centertheatregroup.org/tickets/content.aspx?id=1062">http://www.centertheatregroup.org/tickets/content.aspx?id=1062</a>

I will be purchasing this season shortly. Graph really wants to see Spamalot, so I'll see it again. It was a good time when I saw it in NYC.

[quote author="tmare" date=1244510135]Come on! Splurge! Fly her to NY to see what she really wants to see.</blockquote>

I watched the Tonys last night and wanted to get on a plane so badly...Next To Normal had even Graph interested.

Also playing locally, and a classic: <a href="http://www.onemoreproductions.com/pg200_production.aspx">http://www.onemoreproductions.com/pg200_production.aspx</a>

@ Cacyi: Let me know how Legally Blonde is. I'll test the waters with Dirty Dancing.

@ Tmare: Uh.. No. I refuse to travel via airplane with a 3yr old and an 8 month old. But if the kids were still inside me, I would say YES! I could use some good home cookin'.

Your wife will probably like it if she likes Grease. You, well, just focus on the hawt blonde chick and enjoy the classic tunes and you'll be alright.

[quote author="Serious Weapon" date=1244514057]Cacyi, you're a regular at the Pantages, please tell me what seats are good. Is the orchestra section the nosebleeds?</blockquote>

The balcony is the nosebleeds, but first few rows of the balcony can still be excellent seats because you will still be the same distance from the stage as the orchestra seats below you, but you get to see the staging from above.

Side orchestra may cause sightline issues. I avoid when I can. My priority is center of the room over distance from the stage. IE, I would rather be closer to the center of the house than closer to the stage but off to the side.

Orchestra seats that have a double letter (AA-ZZ) are further back but still not too bad. I saw Lion King from almost the back wall and I still enjoyed it.

Graph and I were in row W on the aisle (300-something) for Dirty Dancing and I had no complaints.

[quote author="irvine_home_owner" date=1244518259]I just heard Lion King is playing in Las Vegas on the radio... can kids enjoy that?</blockquote>

Very much so. Julie Taymor did an excellent job adapting it for the stage. However, your children need to be okay with the scary parts of the movie actually taking place live in front of them, as well as not be afraid of the animals coming down the aisle (ie, getting close to them).

If you are including your kids, you may want to check out Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang as it's closer than Vegas. I'm not impressed by a flying car, but they might be.

Other local family fare:

<a href="http://limoncarr.com/tustinlightopera.htm">Peter Pan</a> (younger kids will enjoy this one)

<a href="http://www.tacfa.org/broadway.html">Anything Goes</a> (I'd say mature 8 and up for this one. Younger kids may get bored.)
