Irvine HAIL storm!
http://www.wunderground.com/US/CA/Irvine.html

Nowcast as of 9:22 PM PDT on April 8, 2011
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are pushing inland across the coastal areas of Orange County....moving off to the northeast around 15 mph. Spotters are reporting small hail sizes smaller than a pea that is accumulating on the ground...with this line as well as brief heavy downpours in the Newport area. As these showers move inland across Irvine...Tustin...and Fremont Canyon...these areas may see brief periods of heavy rain and small hail.

The OC Register article has several photos of accumulating hail in Irvine.http://sciencedude.ocregister.com/2011/04/09/cold-unstable-air-brings-lightning-hail/125589/

My brother was in Corona Del Mar last night. There was enough of the white stuff on the ground to make a snow man.  Yes, it was only about a few inches high, but that's still pretty rare for a beach town. It's actuall not a snow man, but a "hail mary".
