She helped us with our previous home, from picking furnitures, to placement, light fixtures, etc. I'm gonna see her for paint colors and kitchen remodel, soon.
Good luck with your counter top shopping! I myself went to a couple of slab yards and got overwhelmed with the choices.

I used 2 interior designers, and I think the cost of paying them actually saved us some money, after getting their trade discount from furniture purchases. The ones I used does not charge % commission on purchases, like most designers do. They either split their 20% discount with me or charge me the 30 minutes it took them to order the pieces, which is less than the 20% discount I got on the furniture and accessories.
But also, as an alternative, most stores like Restoration, West Elm, etc. offer a free designer to help you choose if you purchase from their store. But they won't help you with other ?s such as furniture placement, or choosing paint.
