Looks like Ello's charter won't let them have ads ever:

So it looks like Ello will eventually turn into a subscription model. Instead of ads, you pay a small fee annually. Or they will turn into donation model, begging for money ala Wikipedia.
But the idea in the article to have a social network for the 1% is very intriguing.
