I'm not working today but I know a few who are.

Other than retail, food and some service industries... why would offices be open today?

lots of ppl work today.  post office is open as are hospitals.  the federal gov is also open.  ppl in "deal" oriented industries such as i-bankers will work if they are closing a deal.  everyone associated with the deal, i.e. lawyers, accountants, etc will also work.
Well... not sure if it's "lots". Drove on the freeway this morning and much fewer cars compared to a normal Friday... and parking lots look pretty empty.

I understand the places you mention, but it seems to me that most are closed.... and those that are open, are probably running on partial staff.

I know on the Fridays I have worked... no one does really anything.

Curious, you guys can think of any other country that has a "Black Friday" like us?  Like an unofficial holiday.

Don't forget Cyber Monday. I'm sure employers must hate this time of year--workers being paid but nothing getting done on Friday and Monday.

In my team meeting on Wednesday, the team leader said, very seriously, that the program manager (his boss) was taking a very hard line on making sure we did NOT come in on Thursday or Friday.  He would be looking at badge scanner reports to make sure we stayed away, and would have a "talk" with anyone who violated this edict so we would be sure to enhance our "work-life balance".  Team leader then immediately follows this up with "so hopefully I'll see you all here on Saturday".
