Southern California saw a remarkable flourishing of architectural sculpture in the 1960s and 1970s as Home Savings and Loan built branch offices throughout the region under the visionary leadership of Millard Sheets. One of Mr. Sheets' principal collaborators was Upland sculptor, John Edward Svenson. Svenson completed 22 site-specific sculptures that were installed in branch offices throughout Southern California. His work is seen in parks, hospitals, hotels, cities, malls, airports, schools, museums and churches. Many know his "Sun Dancer" bronze porpoise fountain at the Laguna Niguel Ritz-Carlton and "George Chaffey" at the Ontario International Airport. He sculpted five larger than life bronze busts for Claremont University and U.C.L.A., and has twice received the American Institute of Architecture Award for Excellence in Sculpture.

California Song is a sculpture representing the sensitivity of Foothill Ranch's design where man and nature is in Harmony. The sculpture is located near Bake and Portola by Whiting Ranch near Ralphs. It was erected in 1991 and another sculpture also was erected at the same time down at Alton but was stolen immediately.
Technically it is outside of the Irvine.
The artist was from Whittier.
Mountain bikers after a long trip often pee behind this sculpture since the only bathroom near by was the coffee place. Adjacent to it is a parking lot for the bikers. Mountain Lions and Coyotes were often found near this sculpture.

His work is being featured at Oceanside. The musuem from 1920's was once the city hall designed by my favorite modernist architect Irving Gill of San Diego. His work was ahead of his time. He mixed the abstraction of mission arches with concrete tilt up construction.
Old town Torrance that Eva posted earlier was one of his 1920's contribution. His work inspired many of the modernists today including the architect who designed City Place in Santa Ana.
