That's better than having to code in COBOL on Univac/Sperry terminal, and hiking to another building on campus to collect a large stack of error printout on green paper.

My first job in Fortune 500 company/corporate world...  Sys Admin on an IBM RISC/6000 box running AIX 3.2.  >_>  Sitting and watching the dots on screen crawl as it loads update from tape drive, until it errors out an hour later.
 
CS / EECS was an impacted major nearly two decades ago at Cal...one thing they did was make a self-paced version of the intro class that didn't require traditional butts in seats. Nowadays it would not be innovative, but consider that this was before the distance learning boom of webcasts. It scaled pretty well because one could watch webcasts if they wanted, or just read the book and have assignments graded by a graduate student. http://www-inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/~selfpace/
