Although the earthquake in Haiti may seem distant to many of us here in Orange County, it has impacted some families here very directly.
FEMA Urban Search and Rescue
Not trying to overstate anything here, but wanted to point out that we have some locals on the USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) Team that have been called into deployment this last week. I happened to be at the station about 1/2 hour after they got the call around 10pm. The team members were given about 4 hours' notice that they would be leaving for Haiti, with or without passports/immunizations/etc., and to notify their loved ones and family that they will be gone for the next three weeks, serving in unfathomable conditions.
I'm thankful that they are out there gaining valuable emergency experience for the inevitable time that it will be "our turn" in SoCal, and I'm sure that their family members would appreciate if we please keep them in our thoughts and prayers as they help complete strangers and put their own health at risk.
