Unbelievable, a company was caught by the DOL for paying employees that worked in California in ruppes. As such, they were paid less than $2 an hour.

Article:
"A Bay Area graphics company is in hot water with the U.S. Department of Labor for paying some of its Indian workers brought to the U.S. in rupees. Now, the type of currency isn't the issue, it's how much those paychecks turned out to be worth.

But EFI admits they kept paying the employees what they were making in India, in rupees. The problem is that amounted to approximately $1.24 per hour. And some of the employees were working round the clock, more than 100 hours a week."

I don't understand the laws EFI broke.  Major foreign consulting firms such as TCS are bringing their employees to the US for consulting projects and the employees are provided with housing, food and stipends.  Sure their salaries converted into local currency seems paltry but their total take home is MORE than staying in their home country as housing and other items are paid for.

I was on a temp assignment in hong kong for 3 months and my hotel and meals were covered.  My US pay was less than my colleagues pay but it didn't matter as it was a temp assignment and I ended up having more in my pocket than not taking the temp assignment.  I imagine it was the same for the bangalore employees.
