Question about security deposit

Hello, I have a question. We are tenants who recently moved out of a property. Our security deposit was $2500. Our landlord says that after having moved out, we actually owe HER $850 as it took all $2500 to clean the house and she is charging us extra 10 days rent past termination of lease because she had to clean the house during those days. I was wondering if this was legal or not because it sounds ridiculous to me.

Thanks.

Yep, that was me. Actually I was posting if they could rent me a house. Anyways, I did find a house to rent and we just recently moved to that one and moved out of the previous house we were staying at.

Also, the landlord is pulling a "you did not notify me 30 days before hand that you were leaving" even though we had a lease contract ending on a specific date which is her reasoning for charging us extra 10 days rent. Thanks for the links, just wondering if this has happened to anyone.

Thanks

Axsuul, unfortunately you do need to give 30 days notice even if the lease is about to expire (this is written into every lease I've ever seen). The leases generally assume that they will convert month-to-month if you don't notify that you're leaving.

As for the cleaning/damages, CA law puts the burden on the LL to justify these expenses. The time to take on a litigious mindset is NOW. Stop talking to this LL on the phone. Send a demand letter that cites CA tenant law asking for all of the information to which you are entitled under the law. Get it notarized, and send it certified/return receipt. Yes, there's a psychological component here. If you start acting like a lawsuit-happy wingnut, your LL might back down and look for easier fish to fry.
