Was anyone else in awe of the job China did for the opening ceremony? I don't remember ever being impressed by an opening ceremony, but China certainly took it and one upped all previous countries that have hosted it.

I think this is the first step for this country to really show its teeth to the world.

In the spirit of the Games, I'll leave Tibet out of this....

But yes, the opening ceremonies were unbelievable. I couldn't believe when people popped out of those boxes (the printing blocks).

Nice view

The opening ceremony was very impressive, but it was also easy to spot guys who were out of sync. The Chinese are not experts at massed performances on this scale, so they relied heavily on technology that was easier to control with computers.

If you want to see real experts at massed performances, check North Korean massed games or "Arirang" events. The Chinese prepared for years for this one Olympic event. The North Koreans stage bigger massed events on regular basis, with far smaller budget and less technology.

North Korean massed performances:

Phelps is 2/2 so far.

The 4x100 was the biggest rundown in the history of swimming. France had the US buried going into the last 50. Unreal. The top 3 were all under WR time.

Smash this baby.

xD This is what happens when you over-plan, then miss some minor details...

Coming soon to London in 2012... (shameless rip-off from Marmot's Hole post)

Opening ceremony with 2,012 acrobats dressed like dressed like Shakespeare, carting around a replica of Stonehenge on miniature steam trains while the HMS Beagle flows above the stadium with holographic finches and tortoises flowing in its electro-light wake.

Is very hard to me to focus and learn the beach volleyball player code...I'm easily distracted...OMG!, I might have ADD...though I have very good teachers, certainly the Brazilians and the Cubans, well all of them!

:-P

There are musings--apparently substantiated--that several of the Chinese women gymnasts aren't of legal age to be competing, which gives them an unfair advantage. Some of them certainly seem to have head/body proportions that aren't consistent with what you would expect from a person 16 years old. At least part of me feels that China condoning this form of cheating takes away from what has otherwise been, so far, a pretty classy venue. I refuse to believe their national olympic committee wasn't aware. If push comes to shove the rules allow plenty of time to strip ill-gotten medals.

While mom and pop sit on the couch eating cheetos watching the Olympics, the Chinese are monitoring all internet and communication activity and Russian is bombing the hell out of their neighbors Georgia. I guess we know what's important. Go Phelps! :)

Phelps is now 3/3. Another world record time. Ho-hum.[/all fired up.]

Lezak is superhuman. Almost more impressive than Phelps because he's not nearly the phenom that Phleps is. I hope I get an oppourtunity to meet him. I want to ask him how he did it. Yeah, yeah, I mean really how he did it. If you follow swimming at all, you know that sort or rundown doesn't happen ever, and particularly against world class opponents.

I'm looking at the US Boxing team, not very impressed and it's amazing how some of these guys on the team made it this far. They're not using the jab, swinging wildly and a couple of them are wrestling more than boxing.

They really should have watched the 1976 Boxing Team ( Sugar Ray Leonard, The Spinks Brothers, John Tate and Howard Davis ) to see how it's done.

Forget about the swimming medals, check out what Michael Phelps eats for breakfast.

"...Three sandwiches of fried eggs, cheese, lettuce, tomato, fried onions and mayonnaise, add one omelet, a bowl of grits, and three slices of french toast with powdered sugar, then wash down with three chocolate chip pancakes."

Man, love to see what he can do to all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ. :)

So if eating breakfast was an Olympic event he'd probably win another Gold.... :smirk:
