IRVINE ? A man was arrested on suspicion of stealing more than 150 packages that were delivered to Irvine residents over the past several months.

Tien Kim Vu, 37, of Santa Ana, was arrested Thursday evening by a patrol officer, said Irvine Police Lt. Julia Engen.

Irvine police detectives are now spending hours this weekend sorting through more than 150 packages found in the suspect's home and car.

The first delivery package thefts were reported in 2010, but complaints rose specifically over the past three months, Engen said. Many residents in north Irvine - north of the I-5 Freeway - have reported packages missing that delivery services had left at their front doors.

The arresting officer, assigned to Irvine's north area, was troubled by the pattern of thefts and has spent several months looking for the thief.

Twice, he had learned of thefts with a suspicious vehicle reported in the area, Engen said. On Thursday, the officer found the same suspicious vehicle and Engen said he watched Vu place a package in his car and drive off.

The suspect was first arrested by the officer for driving a stolen car, and is now detained on suspicion of stealing the delivery packages. He was booked into Orange County jail for possession of stolen property and petty theft. Additional charges may be added as the investigation continues, Engen said.

Many of the victims have been notified, but detectives are still working to connect theft reports with the packages recovered. The thefts so far have been in the north Irvine area. Property found ranges from personal items such as a photo album from the 1970's to a computer server valued at over $1,000. The stolen packages were delivered by several different carriers, including UPS, FedEx and the US Postal Service.

Anyone wishing to report a stolen package may contact Irvine Detective David Smith at 949-724-7233.
