Also, 100% of his families living expenses including meals, housing, vacation, etc are all paid for.  That is pure discretionary income. Total pkg is >$1mm

Not bad.  But for the stress level of being a president, he does deserve a higher comp. than some city managers.

They actually pay for food and personal expenses (dry cleaning, etc) at the White House  and you would think they are maintaining a household somewhere else. I'm with you though, all the money comes in after they leave office.
 
i can't imagine anyone is really pegging for a presidency to get at the eventual exorbitant speaking fees

i do wonder at what level is it fair for the president to get compensated at though? you're generally set after-the-fact, but as mentioned the compensation doesn't really tie with the stress level at all. i dont think it should be fortune 100 CEO levels, mind you. but 400k + 50k expense account does seem a bit "low"
