Marche Moderne

I have heard great things about this little French bistro. Just wanted to see if anyone on this blog has been there and how their experience was.

We're putting together a list of 10 restaurants we have to go to this year in LA/OC. Would Marche Moderne be included on yours? Thanks

Yes, it is on my list as well because I haven't been there yet either. EvaL has been raving about it for years now. I will send her an email and ask her if she would make a one time comeback to give you her opinion.

Is Black Sheep on your list?

You know, I was just about to PM Graph and ask if he knows why she left. She was/is so darned cool and I really do miss her. Heck, I'd even sacrifice Panda if it meant bringing her back.

make sure to add (or at least consider) Bazaar, Providence and Animal to that list.

Bazaar by Jose Andres is a new up and coming restaurant in the SLS Hotel. It's Spanish tapas style where they play with molecular gastronomy. If you watched Top Chef when Marcel was on you'd know what I'm talking about - he now works there. They recently got 4 starts by the LA Times - just google the review to get a better idea of what it is all about.

The tasting menu at Providence must have been one of the best meals I've had.

Animal is next on my list - keep on hearing rave reviews about it.

Marche Moderne is excellent. It is some of the best food in Orange County and their daily prix fixe lunch is an incredible bargain.

I'm not an expert in French cuisine. In my unqualified opinion, the food leans toward French-American (fresh local produce?). My salad had avocado and honey baked ham in it, and the desert menu was kinda skimpy. The duck was nice but thought the sauce was a bit on the light side.

[quote author="savvy" date=1235813692]Eh. The plating is usually prettier than that. But it is a fantastic bistro. You may also want to try Stonehill Tavern in Laguna Beach.

Stonehill Tavern is actually in the St Regis Hotel in Dana Point. Solid hotel restaurant but overpriced for what you get. Marche Moderne is a better value and still quality food.

I agree. But Stonehill Tavern has the most exquisitely beautiful space in Orange County with a more extensive wine list. it's not consistent like MM, but it's riskier in creativity.

I guess like in RE, location does matter. Although MM is conveniently located in SC Plaza, there is not much of a view.

I went last night with family. Bottom line is it is very, very good. Great menu and very good execution. Service was a bit inconsistent...lots of attention one minute and then no service for a while. The porch was a bit cool even with the heaters.

I will definitely go back.

Wifey and I finally went last night. It was great. We started with the scallops, which were very interesting. They were cooked perfectly and came with an almost Morraccan spice to them. My only jab would be that I like to be able to taste the scallop and I think the sauce dominated a little too much.

Otherwise, we had the braised short rib and the venison steak. They were both fantastic and beautifully plated. Definitely one of the best all around culinary experiences I have had in Orange County. I strongly recommend bringing your own wine as the corkage fee is only $10. Fantastic.

Service is still a little amateurish. Not bad, but not at the level of the food. Do restaurants not realize how important service is to the quality of experience or is there simply few talented wait staff?

Hi,

I just went to Marche Moderene in South Coast Plaza, and here are some pictures of the food we ordered.

The chicken was the best dish out of these 3. I would go there again.
