Looking for a road bike...anyone got one or know of one for sale?

Whats up people, so I live in Irvine now and figure when in Rome...

I have been riding a borrowed 1970s road bike for some time now and figure its time to get one that fits me. I have been measured and would ride something with a frame size ~58cm and a seat to bar of around 96cm. I'd be looking to spend under $750 a get decent components and at least some carbon. With a baby on the way and my tendency to live my life at the bottom of the depreciation curve, I would like to try to go used first. My assumption could be wrong but I figure a used road bike shouldn't be too much of a risk. I did many more years of fairly tough mountain biking in Salt Lake and spent the $$ on a good new bike up there.

Thanks for the help and any advice from you seasoned riders would be great.

Also, FYI, Sharkeez gives free Mamosas or Champagne for 1 hour with purchase of a breakfast. My friends and I did a 50 mile round trip from Placentia to Newport Sharkeez on Saturday morning. A bit of wind on the way there but after a few mamosas and an easy 20mph average on they way back there was no complaints...

This one looks like a good buy, CF forks and Seatstays and great components (Dura Ace)

It's a Scattante Frame which was Supergo's (now performance bike) in-house brand...

It's a 57cm, you can adjust the reach by changing out the Stem...

There are always some nice Bikes for sale on CL, you could search the OC, Inland empire and LA sites...

Good luck and let me know if you need any help..... :)

[quote author="screwrealestate" date=1211890061]I may go see that one and there are multiple in the LA craigslist. You hear any complaints about either the Performance or REI brands?

Performance Bike is a great place to buy an entry level Road Bike, there is one in Tustin but I'd suggest the Laguna Hills Store which is on Alicia and Hon, take the 5 Sth, off at Alicia, go right, then take the first right at the Carwash, they have a much better selection there...

Of course, Craigslist is a good resource too, it's a Buyer's market out there, having said that, name brand Bikes at bargain prices tend to go fast...

Like Peter mentioned, definitely check out Performance Bike in Laguna Hills. The guys there are friendly and helpful, and they got a big selection on bikes.

Definitely check out Craigslist if you are a bargin shopper. I would recommend Felt, Giant, and Trek for good carbon bikes. :)

I like to sell my Raleigh Grand Competition 1976. Reynold 531 Chromemoly frame all handcrafted. All original Campagnolo components. Original owner. I saved up several years of allowance from my family's sweat shop so I could get this bike. This bike took me to places that buses did not take me to so I could see those beautiful homes and neighborhoods behind the walls of Bel Air, into the hills of Palos verdes, and Oak Knoll in Pasadena.

Good Karma comes with this bike. It gave me a future. When buses stopped running after midnight it took me home safely in the ghettos. The 15.5 pound light weight 10 speed saved my life many times from the Rottweilers and pitbulls. The fast speed enabled me to escape gangs knifes and flying rocks. It was my companion through out college and we enjoyed many romantic evenings together under the trees of the Scripp courtyards http://www.scrippscollege.edu/admission/visiting-scripps.php in the Claremont campus.

It is lonely being suspended from the rafters of my detached garage. I hope to find it a good companion.

Thats probably about the same age as the bike I am on now and I don't want to cause you any emotional pain or suffering. Sounds like you and the old gal had some good times and if you have the space I would fix her back up or at least donate it to a needy aspiring biker. Thanks for the offer though and I totally understand the feelings. My first surfboard, climbing gear, and skateboard all were routinely studied, cleaned, examined, cared for, thought about during school, and ultimately beaten to hell!

I have a 10 yr old bianchi aluminum frame bike with campi components with very little use on it. It might new tires at this point. I have been meaning to get rid of it for a while as I'd rather have a hybrid vs. a road bike if I get another bike at all. If you are interested PM me and I'll take some pictures of it for you.

[quote author="screwrealestate" date=1212668858]I hear some of you guys talking about Felt bikes, I personally never heard of them but Ive been a mountain biker forever. Hows this deal?

My first Road Bike was a Felt, I put around 3500 miles on it in 12 months, it was a great Bike, when I recommend Brands to friends Felt is always at the top of the list, they're good bang for the Buck...

The ad doesn't say what components this one comes with, I assume it's shimano 105 or something?

But in any case, this looks like a good bike...

Well I picked up the 2004 Felt F45 today and am psyched. Even came with a nice Gyro helmet to replace the 12 year old one I was wearing with Duck tape to hold on the side where I got up close and personal with a tree. Took it from my house by Irvine Center/Culver down to the back bay and back. Nice Smooth ride and definately lighter and better fitting than the piece of 1970s memorabilia I had been riding. Shifters need a bit of tuning as they are a bit sluggish but overall she should suit me well. Turns out it is all Ultegra with a Dura Ace rear, the Mavic Cosmo Elite wheelset, Carbon crank, Carbon fork, and Carbon seatstays. I too off the speedplay pedals and put my SPD pedals on so I can have common shoes for my mountain and road bike.

Now all I need to to is embrace my inner spandex wearing self and I'll be off to the races!

That's great screw! welcome to the dark side, you need to come and join us on a ride....but your Bike sounds like it has good components, you'll love it!

I'm also getting a new Bike, it's a Langster London, a single/fixed speed...I don't know whether to ride it or hang it on the wall, hold on, let me ask the Wife.....

OK, looks like I'll be riding it :red:

It's a really cool Ltd edition, it has a map of the London Tube on the frame along with a decal that says "God save the Queen" etc. It will be great for riding to work and around the Backbay etc, if I can find time to pick it up I'll even ride it on the Century I'm doing on Sunday...nothing beats 100 miles on a new poorly adjusted Bike and new Saddle :bug:

I'd wager $5 that Prof drops you on Back Bay if you ride that thing out with us. Have fun on Sunday... We'll be riding to Sunset again.

Congrats Screw! Hope to see out on the IHB ride one of these days :)

Have fun on the sunset ride....I'll be trying to stay with the Pack on Sunday

Yea I'd love to get out with you guys. Any upcoming rides?

Also, anyone know of a place around here where you can get fitted to a bike and have your hip-knee-foot alignment checked and corrected? I have a history of knee issues so wanted to get fitted to the new bike before doing too many miles to keep in good health.
