Well, I'm glad that this discussion is just over recycling, and not about Great Depression stories like "fighting for rotten food in St. Louis garbage dumps". At least people are still eating, and we don't have 10% of schoolchildren with severe malnutrition with rickets and such like in New York during the Great Depression.

that was what I was just about to say, I rip my statements and financial letters apart by hand and mix it in with the kitty litter in the same plastic bag... done!

All very interesting posts. For me personally I don't mind people taking out of the recyclables but don't like the idea of someone is doing it in the middle of the night or looking through my other trash for other items.

Btw, when you shred personal paperwork, do you like to put it in the recycle bin or the regular trash? I would prefer to burn the stuff to be extra safe but that would probably break several environmental and safety laws. I suppose adding the kitty litter adds an extra layer of protection.

Another interesting article popped up on the OC Register today--this one focuses on dumpster diving as a hobby. I guess there are groups of people who choose to do this for ideological and not necessarily economic reasons. They tend to focus on commercial dumpsters such as Trade Joe or Whole Foods. Is anyone on IHB willing to fess up on their secret hobby?
