Dishwasher rack & washer machine rust repair

If you had dishwasher racks develop rust spots, you probably already know the replacement cost of the rack is $$$. Amazon sells a product called "uber goop" liquid vinyl in a bottle that works great. Lightly sand (or use a small cheap rotary tool from harbor freight) the rust spots and apply. Note that liquid vinyl dries quickly, so wear gloves and place a finger over the bottle opening to keep it sealed while you're working with the little brush (attached to the cap).

Amazon also sells little silicon caps that goes over the dishwasher prongs, wish I had known this earlier and installed it when the dishwasher was new.

Anyways, after DIY repair on the dishwasher rack, I was eyeing the uber goop bottle and realized it would work on the washer. Unlike the wash machines of old that used "forever chemicals", the new ones tend to rust faster around the exterior of the drum (i.e. areas connecting to the lid, bleach dispenser, etc.). Just lightly sand the rust spots and apply uber goop. It won't look professional -- looks "goopy", but the liquid vinyl stuff works great. Since it's designed for dishwasher rack repair, it will hold up to high temperatures.

Wish I had bought a Speed Queen washer...

I just did this repair maybe 6 weeks ago. Got a silicone cap assortment, and a tube of food safe RTV. Luckily all my rust spots were near the wire ends, so I just snipped them flush past the rust with a cable cutter and bonded the caps on. Did the same repair on the countertop dish rack at the same time.

Do you have a whole house water conditioner or softener? Personally I haven’t noticed rust in dishwasher on my Bosch dishwasher with > 1 year of use doing little maintenance on it since installing whole house water conditioner from Supreme Water based in MV.

Water conditioners don't change the laws of physics and chemistry, and they won't remove oxygen from your water. If your dishwasher parts are in good shape you may not have any rust at all. Parts are typically either stainless steel, or coated with a vinyl skin. It's when the coating gets damaged that rust can take hold and snowball. Spalling as the rust grows larger than the original metal further breaks the protective coating, leading to more rust.

Yes, I have water softener (the kind that eats salt pellets).

You can buy 100-200 Silicone Dishwasher Rack Caps for $5 from Amazon or Walmart. I'd put them on to save the trouble with rust down the road.
